I posted this in the Misc. electrical and then realized I may get more response here. I have a 1986 ranger 2.9L with dual tanks. The front fuel tank is the only one being used no matter which tank is selected on the switch. The gauge only shows the level of the front tank no matter which tank is selected. There's power to the switch. When I select the rear tank, power goes to the selector valve on the brown wires. When the front tank is selected, there's power to the selector valve on the red wires. If I unplug the selector valve with the truck running, it stays running. I can drive it anywhere with the switch in either position and it runs fine but gas is only used from the front tank. Does anyone have any idea of the problem. I did a search and found others have had similar problems with the in tank fuel pumps, but the truck dies when the bad pump is selected. No help there. Thanks for any suggestions.

I have the same problem with my 1988 Ranger 2.9L with dual tanks. Mine is having the same problem, although I can only use the rear tank. I think it has something to do with the selector valve itself.

Re: Fuel Tank Selector Valve

I was wondering if it was the selector valve also. I can only find universal ones available and the 6 ports aren't in the same place as the original. This would require using fuel line hose to route it to the proper ports to avoid bending the hard plastic lines around. Any other ideas? Thanks.

Re: Fuel Tank Selector Valve

Thanks. Yes, I had seen that link before and read it. My truck doesn't die on either tank selected, but only takes fuel from the front tank. The rear tank is full since I filled it before this problem occurred. I did find that Ford still offers the selector valve - $151 on-line. I just want to be sure it's the tank selector valve and not something else. This is my first Ranger. I own 4 of the B-IIs and really like them. This Ranger is my daily driver and has been trustworthy. Thanks for the info and the welcome.
