Help! Where do I get a tach signal on a 07 2.3?

I went through the alldata and got the pins of everything else I need but there is no mention of a tach signal in the diagrams. I read somewhere that the coil pack ignition vehilces pull this off the crank sensor. I tried this. I got a signal but it certainly was not right. My RPM's read max and went down when I goosed it.

I can't find a voltage on the gauges that varies when I step on the gas either!?

What the heck drives the tach on the gauges?

And where on the PCM can I find the right signal?

(I am putting in a safc I had laying around the house)

If no one gets back to you, I've got the wiring diagrams for the '06' Ranger. The tach pick-up is from the crank sensor but with-out taking a longer look.

I'll give it a shot.


Right now I have it on the crank position sensor but I only get a valid reading under 2500rpm and off idle. At idle I get a 9999 readout, then I bump the accelerator and its OK till 2500, after that it jumps all over the place. On the safc there is a setting for the number of cylinders and I have to set it at 2 cylinders to even get this close.

I am just using this thing to get my gas mileage up. Right now I don't have anyway to tell what I am doing to the AF mixture other than the way the truck runs/check engine light. I have an EGT I can slap in to make sure the cylinder head temps are not running away.

if the 07 rangers are like the 06 150 with a digital odometer you can pull the tac reading from there, just hold down the trip reset button before turning the key on, so there may be pin behind the cluster

I have pulled the whole cluster out. There is 2 plugs with many, many pins. Not much to look at, I put a voltmeter on every pin looking for a not-12v signal that moved when I revved it up. No luck.

There are three plugs on the PCM 175E 175B 175T in that order along the firewall if you are standing in front looking at it. Which plug is it on? I guessing the 175E because thats where I got everything else but the power. I can't really look at it until the weekend.

if you hold the button while turning the key you can get a reading for almost everything i tried it, it even has a digital speedo

Sorry, i can't help on that. I found the information on a data base without any photo.
