What did YOU do today?

Eating in Beaver...

That sounds right up your alley.
You should come, too. Maybe we could find a restaurant called Twisted Sisters. I'll send you a Google pin for directions.

My BIL passed on Saturday. At one point he was my best friend. We met while working at an Oldsmobile dealer. We bonded over our mutual love of the outdoors. We spent ALOT of time fishing the hard water... small game hunting and deer camp. It's also how I met... then married my amazing wife.

What did YOU do today?

I'm just gonna remember him from that time period. Shortly after that... he was plagued with health issues that he could never overcome. He spent more time in the hospital then home for the last ten or twelve years it seems.

Rest in peace my friend...

Ill see you on the hard water again someday.

Sorry for your loss. Friends like that are rare.

Always the wise guy...

Honestly, if I had seen your next post, I would not have put that out there. It's meant to give you a chuckle. Plus, remind you we haven't camped together in a while.

No worries...

And I know... I'd like to do a camping trip with the fellas.

Nice. He must live out west where they have more room to fly them. Our local club is only allowed to go up to 10,000ft.
Nope, they live in Falls Church, Va, very near Washington D.C. His club has to notify the FAA before they launch to avoid having the Air Force scramble jets- and the huge bill they'd get.

FAA notification is normal procedure, even if not very close to an airport. There is a whole process of filing for a "waiver" which specifies the air space for launch activities - up to a certain altitude above ground level for a specific radius from the launch point. Then, on the day of the launch, the FAA is called and the waiver is "opened" for the allocated hours. The FAA publishes a "NOTAM" (Notice to Airmen) that these activities are occuring in the specified area. Pilots are encouraged but not required to avoid the area. If a plane encroaches during the launch hours, all launch activities must cease until the plane leaves. Additionally, the FAA will occasionally call the club and ask them to stop temporarily while air traffic moves through the area.

Yeah. I have been club president, secretary or treasurer at various times. The "behind the scenes" part of operating a rocket launch can be challenging. Our local club currently flies just a few short miles from Shaw Air Force Base. McEntyre ANG base is just a few miles past that. See some interesting things, occasionally.

Well, got another stick of angle iron for the shop and got it cut roughly to what I need. They’re getting used to seeing me at the steel supplier, lol. I have everything to get the frame finished up now though. Tomorrow I’ll probably be welding the rest of the frame together or mowing the properties.

My daughter sent me pictures of her husband's newest rocket project. I built 18" model rockets in my youth, his projects are a little bigger.View attachment 144965

Holy cow, look at that damn thing!

I am honestly in disbelief that you can build something like that and launch it at all. But having said that, God bless America, huh? Where else on earth do you think you could play with those kind of toys? More power to you guys. I’d love it if you posted a video or told me where I could look at some of it.

Did I ever mention that I really like Craigslist/marketplace? Ever mentioned I have a few CB radios? Yeah, I live in the past…

Today I scored a Cobra SSB/AM 135 base station, an old 23 channel crank knob model.

And I also got a Sears RoadTalker 40

The 135 ssb base has the old flip-tile clock. It all works like new. And it has a standby mode, so you can turn off the all-the-time power, but it will chime up if somebody’s calling on the channel you set.

I haven’t looked at the RoadTalker yet, I’ll probably just flip that one if it doesn’t grow roots in the shed of miracles

Oh, BTW, $30 for both of them. Does anybody know of a 12 step CB program?

Yes, actually. Actually, it is probably about 50 steps

From the parking lot to the CB shop.

LDRS is the largest rocket launch each year in the US. Our South Carolina club used to host it occasionally until the industrial park started growing closer and closer to our launch field. In fact, one year, a "friend" from church invited me to attend LDRS and see what it was all about. I left the event with a rocket kit and new hobby. Don't go unless you are prepared for that. I have seen model rockets so serious that from 1,000ft away from the launch pad, you would feel the shock wave from motor ignition. The biggest rocket I ever built and flew was 8" diameter and 8 1/2ft tall. Weighed 43lbs on the launch pad and flew to 3400ft agl. There is a 3 level certification process for qualifying to fly the big ones. Safety is a big thing.

So I looked up “LDRS.”

The Name: "Large and Dangerous Rocket Ships" originated as a tongue-in-cheek reference to the massive motors and rockets flown by hobbyists, requiring vast, unpopulated fields for safe recovery.

Too damn funny. When I get a minute, I’m going to have to look into this.

Did they always go straight up, or do they once in a while go slamming into something close by. My interest might be in the latter. No wait, scratch that…

EDIT/AFTERTHOUGHT: if I want to learn and get involved, do I have to travel to the Middle East for the tech sessions?

Today I forgot to put coffee in the machine before turning it on.The first time the coffee looked a little weak, perhaps time to clean the machine. On the second try I forgot to put the pot under the drip... but at least caught that lapse before walking away and coming back to a mess.
