What did you do to your Ranger today? (Part Deux!)

Also, @pjtoledo , you get a pretty good view of why you can't fit an oil cooler in there. No room between the manifold and engine mount. They didn't leave much real estate.

I thought that was your exhaust filter in that picture.

Might as well be for where they have it crammed.

There were a few things with this engine they really phoned in. Oil filter placement is one of em.

Almost had a perfectly reasonable excuse to get a set of headers today...

I let one shop touch my truck one time, and they somehow return it with four stripped exhaust flange studs.

So, for several hours:

End result is probably usable...

Worst case, another JBA box shows up at my house.

That would be just terrible. 🙂
I had the two on the passenger side snap on me when I was replacing the cat. It was not a fun job drilling those out so I could use a broken bolt extractor on them. At the time, the bolts were also a dealer only item. So, there was a lot of fun to be had in that whole ordeal.

Yeahhhhhhhhh..... I was waiting for the one to snap on me, finger hovering over the magic "deliver headers to my house" button.

The cat design on this thing is just stupid, and the y pipe routing is almost as dumb. Going to make reading a wideband lots of fun with the left bank runner almost double the length of the right bank.

Hoping the studs are usable in the end. The one may hold, it may not. We will see. I have a feeling as the blower pulley size increases I'll be looking at replacing them anyway in search of more efficiency.

That egr line looks like it's going to be a blast to remove in order to re-route. 🙄

I imagine they're 10mm, had you already pondered going down to 3/8" on the studs with issues? I mean I don't want to get in the way of any excuses... :)

Well....... the issue with 3/8 and 10mmx1.50 is they are *so close* to being interchangeable that I second guessed myself because ranger had random SAE bolts scattered through the truck for uh, reasons.

In due time tho, yeah.... more JBA boxes.

I have enough stacked out for now though... two more milkcrates of parts to hang before winter.

Another thought. If I take a passenger seat off of the track mechanism, won’t it just bolt down on the driver side track mechanism? The slide and recline are part of the track and not the seat, yes/no?

If I do that, and I build a center console, that could solve a couple other minor problems I have since the cab of that truck is so small. Not enough storage, and another place to put some speakers, and….

What are everybody’s thoughts?
Slide is the track. Recline is the seat frame. If you have a good frame, it's not hard to make the padding and the cover from the passenger side fit the driver's side though.

Reading this, I have a vague memory bouncing around in my noggin. I think it was one of the machinists when I was in Johnson and Johnson right out of school a 1000 years ago taught me this. Make a “pilot nut.“. Yeah, I never heard of it either and I’ve never heard of it since.

Basically, take a nut that’s a slightly smaller diameter and drill it and tap it. Use just slightly smaller drill bit than you’re supposed to, and then don’t tap it all the way. Use a pilot tap, and only run the pilot tap maybe halfway into the nut. That way you end up with a tapered thread, constricting as it goes over the bolt, and it grabs better on a bolt that has been thinned down.

We did it a few times at that operation, but again, I’ve never heard of it before or since. And having posted it here, I have no idea how it would hold up in an application with that much heat and stress.

Obviously, you’d have to use a different smaller socket, but how often do you do it…

But it’s a thought, as always, hope it helps

I've thought about this some in the past, as far as the oil cooler goes. I believer there is enough room to install a sandwich adaptor for a traditional oil cooler rather than one you would find on an Explorer that uses the engine coolant system. I've just had more pressing projects to take care of. So, I never ventured down that road. They even have some with a thermostat of sorts that would probably still fit in that space. Then you could plumb stainless AN hoses up front to a cooler mounted behind the grill.

I also could never settle on what would be a good size oil cooler, though I suppose if you had a thermostat model, the size of the cooler wouldn't matter if it was too big.

Nope!

Have an entire thermostatic mishimoto set up here if you want to give it a shot. I couldn't find a way to get any of the fittings to clear the manifold. The only possible solution i could see was a complete relocation of the oil filter, or plumbing and independent cooler through the oil pressure sensor, and returning it through valve covers or the filler cap. Which would necessitate aluminum valve covers and a welded bung.

Heh. Bung.

That... is unfortunate....

I wonder how they got the one to fit on the Explorer, or was that only on the V-8 models?

Truck bed repair. I'm curerntly waiting on paint to dry and a storm cell to pass by. Then I can go about cutting out some more patches for other spots in the bed. Details in my 2011 build thread.

Shiny 🙂

Finished mounting and wiring up the dual wideband in my V8 truck today. Hooked it all up to the Telorvek panel behind the seat. I still have to run the 4 pin communication cable and MAP hose under the vinyl flooring. I also need to mount the dual readout gauge under the dash.

I also finished installing all of the pain in my arse header bolts I bought. They're a c-clip design and my header primaries are so tight to the bolts that I had to custom fit all of the locking parts to each bolt. I will cuss myself in a major way when they have to come out someday. The allen head on the end of the bolts make them extremely nice to tighten up though.
