i picked up a 92' supercab with not title and rusted to hell without a bed..., RUNS MINT im in the process of cleaning up my 88' cab and matching bed to be swapped over. while moving the truck around the yard i noticed the fuel pump leaking, and its rusted to shit on the tank. i need to replace it. planning on using an earlier steel tank and sender/pump. my question is; will the fuel pump for the 2.9 be enough to feed the 4.0?

The 88 will have a two pump system, low pressure “lift” pump in the tank and high pressure on the frame rail. A 92 will have a high pressure pump in the tank and that’s it. So you’re going to have to reconfigure things. Pressure didn’t change between those years so that doesn’t matter. The older pump system, if it’s still in good condition, should work to feed a 4.0 just fine because in the early 90’s the pump was the same whether it was a 2.3, 2.9, 3.0, or 4.0.

Personally though, I see no reason to keep the complicated older fuel system. I’m actually going to strip it out of my 88 when I get back to working on it. Was not my original plan, but after having to replace the fuel lines in my 89 and my one 00 because of leaks and knowing that I repaired a repair on the fuel lines in my 92, I’d rather just make sure I don’t get any more surprises. Plastic tank, 89 pump in the tank, new fuel lines, no trying to pinch off a gas line on the side of the road.
