Todays weather

It’s been low to mid 40s here in the daytime, very sunny, and at night 35° or so. It’s supposed to rain Thursday Friday, with a high of like 35. Saturday night to Sunday we’re supposed to have a wintry mix, with a low of 16°

I’ll just stay home. It’ll all pass in a day. I grew up in New Jersey and upstate New York, and I think I still remember how to drive in the snow, but I’m surrounded 1,000,000 country boys with four-wheel drives that can’t wait to prove that they really don’t work any better than anything else on a sheet of ice.

I might get to put the Missing Linc in four-wheel-drive for the third time since I bought it in 2020. Big Red F250 is too big a target to try.

Oh, and thanks for sending it our way.
no problem at all, I just line it up on I 75 and give a big push.

Real feel sub zero on Saturday with chance of snow. Looks like I will be lining up some work in the house, not the garage.

Yeah, the forecast isn't looking great. Single digit lows for the forseable future and teens during the day. I think today is supposed to break freezing for a minute then start dropping again.

It's currently 60. Tomorrow will be 59. The cold air moves in on Friday, and the high Saturday will be 22 with a low of 5 degrees. 5-years ago people in north Texas lost gas and electric for like a week. My daughters house had quite a bit of damage from a frozen pipe that busted. I lucked out and didn't lose any utilities.

I have my two exterior faucets insulated and a heater set up in the bathroom out in the shop to keep that from freezing. I'll have to let the water out there run at a slow trickle instead of a drip The water line is only 18" under the ground, and it's insulated where it comes up out of the ground and into the wall of the shop, but it would freeze in the single digits. Today I put extra insulation around it for extra precaution.

My Jackery 500 is charged up. My gas furnace has an outlet next to it that it plugs into. I'm wondering if my furnace would still run if I plugged that cord into my Jackery if the power went out.

The blower motor is a power hog, if it did run it wouldn't be for long.

But if yours is only 110 it may not be much of a furnace compared to a northern one, mine is 220.

it teased us with near 40 today. tomorrow the bottom falls out and will stay out for a week or so.
no problem, I have a parka and long johns but not enough sense to stay inside.

Snow and/or freezing rain in the forecast? WTF!

Quick; to the liquor store!

It's a Georgia thing . . .
Snow in Georgia, is an evil conspiracy, thought up by Big Milk and Big Bread, to drive up sales by inducing wild-eyed panic in the population.

We frantically strip the grocery store shelves, of milk and bread, then drive our trucks into ditch on the way home. It's almost a religion here . . .

Here too… enjoy your milk sandwich in the ditch. People are stupid.

Saturday here they are calling for -4* for the low and 9* for the high…
And I'll be out in my unheated garage changing the oil in my wife's Pacifica.
Luckily those are easy and fast to change the oil in.

Snow is supposed to be worse south and east of Pittsburgh but we might get pounded Sunday thru Monday.
Could be an inch, could be a foot or more. Weathermen can't make up their minds.
I'm going to put the "Closed Due To Weather Conditions" sign on my office door when I leave on Friday.
If I make it in, I make it in. If I don't, I don't. Have 12 miles of twisty cow path roads between my house and the main highway that my work is on.

It seems like everybody with deep pockets is getting one of those Generac backup generators that comes on automatically when the power goes off. I don’t have deep pockets for such things.

I took my downstairs furnace, which works off 110 V, and I simply put a back-and-forth 3 contact switch on the power, feeding it. If my main power goes off, I can flip that switch, which is then connected to a regular old 16 three extension cord. I have a 1150 watt power inverter that I can put in the F250 diesel, and let it idle. With both tanks full I think it idles for two days or something like that. Yes I have to go outside to flip the switch and plug in the truck As long as I have the downstairs furnace, I can heat the whole house and keep the pipes from breaking.

Just a thought

5 years ago, people in Texas were using the generators in Ford F-150's to power their homes after the storm.

Regardless of the fuel source, they are great until the fuel runs out. Even natural gas needs electric to keep the line pressurized.

Hopefully, whatever takes the power out gets fixed before then. Like the week long thing Jim was talking about as an example. How many people are setup to keep their generator running that long?

I probably could, but the little generators I have aren't meant to run that long. And while I have kerosene heaters I can fall back on, they stink and probably wouldn't heat the whole house. Blanket partitions would probably need to go up to stretch out the fuel supply and make it so we only need to run one.

Gas companies generate their own electricity from the gas.
Widow friend of my wife has a Generac on her house, her husband put it in before he died.
I'd like one but I can't afford it right now.
I have a small portable generator in my yard barn but it's getting old and a pain in the ass to start. I keep a can of ether out there.
Been wondering to hard wire it to my boiler to get it running for heat. I'll figure it out. I've used it in the past to run the TV or fridge but never for days on end.

I have a tri-fuel portable 7200 watt generator. I run it on propane. Propane stores indefinitely, as long as the tank doesnt leak. I have four 100 lb tanks, so I can take the in my truck to get filled if necessary. Also have a 2000 watt dual fuel Genny that I use for tools as its cheaper to run. Also use propane. I'm in an RV so I'm used to being off grid...
