hey guys new to the forum im working on my 4.0 ohv engine and i purchased the 410 cam i installed it no issues there but from previous threads i saw that you need custom length pushrods so i called smith brothers and had 5.550 pushrods made and me just spinning it over with a ratchet it seems like the coils are binding too much but with new stock length pushrods this issues goes away but im assuming this much bind isnt ok but let me know what you guys think

IMO bind is when all the coils touch each other. I dont see bind in your pic.

its ok for the top 3 coils to be touching like that ? i only imagine that it will get worse when running up the rpm and with the lifters being pumped up fully ,maybe i will just throw some new stock style springs in and run it just dont wanna put it all back together and have issues

Yup, it's ok for some coils to touch. You're only in coil bind when the spring stops compressing.

I installed the 410 cam with stock replacement pushrods and original springs without an issue in my particular setup. IDK what made mine different from all the guys who say custom length pushrods are required. But my heads were milled about 10 thousands. All the tolerances stack up though - cam lift, pushrod length, rocker ratio, spring pad depth, spring height, valve length, valve seat depth, etc.

You are correct that pressurized hydraulic lifters make a difference. In my case, I setup a dial indicator on the pushrod tip side of the rocker and measured 18 or 19 thousands of depression into the internal lifter plunger when the rocker shaft was torqued down and the cam was on base circle. Too much preload and you could get in to coil bind or your lifters will stay collapsed. Too little preload and you get excessive valve lash, noise, wear, etc.
 
Is this for the 4.0 SOHC? Wondering if there is a cam upgrade I can do while I have my engine apart? Not that I'd do it or anything🤫

Edit: nevermind, I opened my eyes and see that the OP clearly said OHV. Any popular cams for the SOHC though?
