Coleman Liquid Fuel

I've been wanting one of these for a while. The smaller size might be easier to pack on trips. Seems like they're usually listed for $80 or more around here. This one was listed for $40. I got it for $35. Needs some cleaning.

The seller buys abandoned storage units and sells the contents. She had a few other lanterns, including a pair of 220's that need globes @$10 for the pair. I almost took them, too. But really don't need them.

They are neat, mine is a great runner. Like 3/4 the light of a dual mantle on 1/2 the fuel and 1/2 the mantles (fuel has gone nuts lately in price too)

However the older ones (my '61 is in that category) are a little taller than the newer ones that can use the same carry case as a 288. So I rarely take mine anywhere since I don't have a case it fits in (and don't really have time to make one)

Yours has the newer/smaller vent so it would fit in a 288 case.

Thanks for the info about the case.

Ya'll might need to go into treatment for this addiction :D

No no, its fine. I can quit whenever I want...

Actually I pretty much have. I have a backlog of lanterns I need to work on and its been awhile since I have found anything new worthwhile to bring home.

I’m not addicted. I’m not a collector. I don’t have a prob.. Oh, look! An unfired turd and a mil-spec.!

I promised an update and here it is.

First: I won this cool little 530 stove from an auction and I think I paid $32 for it. I have wanted one of these for a while, they were only made for a few years in the late 40's. I expected at least somewhat of a project with this one but it actually needed almost nothing, just wiped the dust off and it fired right up.

Second: I won this 242B lantern from 1936 in a different auction for about $25. It was really dirty, the fount was kinda nasty inside but it cleaned up pretty well and ultimately needed very little as well, just an o-ring on the fuel cap and a mantle.

Third: Yeah... I have a turd now. I got it for free and expected that it would not be worth saving but it cleaned up pretty well. It's an early one from the first production year in 1976. Inside the fount was really clean. I did need to buy a globe for it (found a 5114 propane lantern at a pawn shop for $16 to use as a donor....globe is the same.) Way more money than I wanted to spend on a turd but now this turd is complete and it's all mine.

And yes, they both work. The 242 is a sweet little lantern!!!

Last: hardly worth mentioning but another 502 stove. It's pretty beat up but the fount looks real nice inside. I paid $1 for it at a yard sale...figured it would get thrown away otherwise... if anyone wants it, PM me. pending, that was fast lol

I have the military version of that stove, I think I got everything to make it go I just need to circle back and work on it.

I have a nickel found lamp, so far nickel fount lanterns and turds have eluded me. That 242B cleaned up really nice.

Okay I give....what's a "turd lantern?"

I don't have a complete running 502...

I have a parts 502... and that rough one would likely get one usable 502 put together. If nobody has made dibs on it... I'll take it.

@Shran incoming PM

Too late :secret:

Yep... brown... they look like Thermos lanterns from the same era (which people love to hate) and they have a reputation for leaking valves. Of course, mine leaks. When you turn it off, it continues burning on a very low flame, just barely visible. I let it run like that for 10+ minutes last night before I just had enough and unscrewed the fuel cap to shut it off. I don't think I will fix it anytime soon, if ever. I don't think I will run this lantern ever again either so I don't care if it's fixed... it requires a full tear down to fix it.

The early ones had problems, is yours one of those?

Yep. It looks like a fairly easy fix, just requires a full tear down to replace the Schrader valve. I don't think I really care to do that right now as I really just want a wall hanger. Maybe someday.
