Should I save this fx4?

i found one for 1700 about 3 hours away that is way better, but its an automatic trans.
I was just out in Colorado and a silver 03 fx4 level 2 sold for $1000! I tried like hell to get it but the guy had a million people interested. All it needed was a clutch.

Did these things come stock with a manual transfer case shifter? I would much rather have that than the electronic crap.

Yes, the fx4 off road and fx4 level 2 rangers were the last of the rangers to be offered with both manual transmissions and transfer cases. I much prefer them as well, and they also look super cool!

So I’m willing to admit when I have a problem… and that problem is the Facebook marketplace. I just picked up one of the coolest trucks I’ve laid my eyes on (beauty is in the eye of the beholder)
This is the one that I will be saving instead of the black fx4, but I will be using parts from the black one on another project (shifters, trans and case)
This truck is a 2011 fx4 off road with 60k miles, clean title, needs an engine, has custom bumpers, and skid plates, disc brakes in the rear, newly rebuilt rear axle, 35’s, etc…. So needless to say I will be doing this one instead of the black one and sadly the black one will be a spare parts truck for me and my many many other projects!
This truck will be my new daily driver.

...the transfer case runs connected all the time in the "live axle" config. .
Just to be clear to inexperienced readers, that is true for all 4WD Rangers starting around the 2001 model year. (Allegedly many/most 2000 model Rangers too.) Was also how all 4WD/AWD Explorers operated from 1996-2001 and likely beyond.

Well done - - good chance it's a Canadian vehicle as guys on this site have pointed out the 2011 top-tier version in the US was the "Sport" trim level.

Swap all the good bits off the Level II and make a last-model year FX4 Level II ! ! !

One last thing I forgot to mention….. it’s got a salvage title….
I reside in Missouri, and here you can put a salvage vehicle back on the road. I don't know what your state does, maybe you can put it back on the road in your state?

My son is wanting to have “matching” trucks so I may still end up fixing the black truck …. Not 100% sure yet…. Need an engine for the red one first and foremost

We can put a salvage vehicle back on the road,… I just want to watch how much I put into the truck. My son wants to put doors, engine, clutch, paint (blood red bed liner) and clean the interior. Nothing crazy but can get pricy real quick.

That Level II, is the closest thing to a Shelby that the Ranger ever came to. I would save the title if you can or have interest to. It's worth it to the right person, plus you'll be shopping in the expensive department. My Level II came stock with 100% leather buckets, makes me cringe since I'd never own anything with wheels that had leather bucket seats. But I'm not complaining. Just rubbing a whole lot of emu oil, saddle soap (what ever) around these days, and I could never reply to a thread regarding "what should I use on my leather buckets". It did well down south off road in Terlingua in the creek beds. That rear axle I believe is the biggest bang for the buck if it was the "R7" axle code. That and those Alcoa forged wheels which tuck under real well!

Glad to see you moving on however. Rust never sleeps. Nice looking parts truck, oh wait, I may have switched things around a bit~

Ya I think this red 2011 is probably the nicest truck I’ve owned as well…. Not use to “nice” trucks that’s for sure. My daily driver is either a 300k mile 96 Mazda b4000, or a 300k mile 302 swapped ranger…. So this is a great change of pace lol

Lord knows that we all need less creature comforts, especially the ones that simply never last, and take forever to get working again.... but now & then....(at my age)....something that helps me enjoy life a little more, like helping out some young ones only because they want to take on a challenge, that makes it all worth it. Good luck & please drop in and let us all know how it's been going. A thread worth enjoying.

As soon as I get an engine in my hands I will be posting updates occasionally…. Life has been pulling me all over lately. My son’s truck broke down today so I will be fixing his before I can get to my own stuff! Lol
