Afternoon!

I'm marking up the caliper brackets to make the cut for the mustang rear disc brake swap. The left one is marked, the right bracket should be the opposite right? Like I have laid out here?

That's what makes sense to me at least, but would like confirmation so I don't have to go digging for another in the junkyard again 😆

Thanks!

Yes, they need to mirror each other.

just back a while ago from a parts pulling paradise. did the mustang rear disc to '88 ranger about 6 years ago. thought it might be time to do the E brake. must have trashed the original E brake cables. found a series 3 long bed to scavenge. my calipers are the external E brake. as expected, the cables are too long. someone was going to send me pics of his copper pipe/tube cure but i never got them.
re: your pics. something doesn't look right to me in your set up lines. i think the part on the right should have lines following the marker and case cutter.
re: the brakes. damn thing will stop on a dime. found out at highway speed when some ass didn't use his blinkers. glad i made the switch.

You're 100% correct. I originally drew the line wrong, why I ended up taking a pic and making sure here 😂.
Thanks for the reply!

there is a dude near me that is parting a 2011 ranger ext ended cab. it has discs on the back already. i have always thought about getting his rear end and swapping onto my truck for the brake set up.

i just would have to make sure his is an 8.8 and 4.10, like mine. i wouldn't want to get 3.73 or something worse

I've written up a detailed journal with photos documenting this Mustang rear disc brake upgrade with my '02 Ranger. PM me if you want a copy.

For me the mustang setup is better. The parking brake is built into the caliper for the rotor instead of having a separate drum inside the rotor. Only downside is you now have the ratcheting caliper piston. The drum in rotor parking brakes on these rangers are not self adjusting so you have to disassemble everything to adjust the parking brake every once in a while.

that is how my nissan titan was, a separate drum set up in the center hub of the rotor.

My F250 is the same way too. It's a pain in the but to work on.

I'd prefer just a drum brake honestly

You can use a brake spoon or flat screwdriver through the backing plate/dust shield. Crank the adjuster until you can't spin the tire and then back them off a few clicks.

I think the Panther Body cars had something similar. Parking brake adjuster was in the middle of the parking brake cable.

You never really notice the upgrade until you really need it. Maybe it's only once in a while, but it is most certainly enough to make the effort pay off.
