Idling and highway issues

Hi there! Brand new to the forum and figured I should try my luck here to see if anyone else has come across similar issues before I start ripping stuff apart. Thanks in advance for help and advice!

I just picked up a 1992 b2200 2.2l MFI for quite a good deal, not too much rust and a pristine interior. The only issues are as such:

The previous owner said the truck was running great until his wife accidentally left the lights on and drained the battery. Battery was replaced and it started idling rough immediately after (enough to stall it occasionally). The throttle also starts to cut out around 3000 rpm on the highway or when I step on it to accelerate more than just gently in any gear. Seems like it can only handle a certain amount of fuel demand before it gives up type thing, not necessarily rpm specific. Everything definitely seems worse the warmer it gets as well. I will be replacing spark plugs, wires, fuel filter, and cleaning the throttle body and maf at a minimum in the near future, and probably investigating the fuel pump.

If anyone has experienced something like this or has any insights on the best place to start your help would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks a ton!

ThatCat.

Pull the codes on it and see if the computer is happy. It's a 50-50 chance, but sometimes it will give you a code which can be a hint to what is wrong.

You never know, after the battery was ran down someone may have tried to jump it with the jumper cables on backwards.

What Franklin said ^
Codes could offer some direction.
Idle Air Control (IAC) and Throttle Position Sensor (TPS) are other contributing causes. A couple of other little things as well. I've been going around with my MAF for a couple of weeks now o_O.

Please post back and let us know what you find.

check for vacuum leaks as well. maybe it popped off the purge line or something with the battery work.

Wow thanks for all the responses! I’ll start with the codes and hunt for some vacuum leaks hopefully today once the kids decide it’s time for a nap 😅

So I couldn’t find any vacuum leaks, all the lines actually look really good; also I forgot to mention the engine light was never on, tested anyway and it threw no codes. I’ll test the MAF and TPS later today; the whole battery issue is making me suspect a possible computer problem. Hopefully the battery swap is a red herring and it’s something easier to deal with 🙏 Will do everything I can before assuming ecm for sure.

What codes did you get? You should have gotten at least one. And did you do KOER and KOEO? Key On Engine Running and Key On Engine Off?

there may be a resistor deal that runs the fuel pump on that style truck that was typical for the jdm stuff. definitally causes this issue. follow the wiring

I tried key on engine off; I’m not too familiar with the obd1 system (probably doing something wrong) but just to clarify it’s the one pin connector on the passengers side rear engine compartment that gets grounded out to pull codes? What is the proper procedure if you don’t mind me asking? I also pulled out the ecm today and found a capacitor had leaked onto the board…

fuzzy death.....bummer.

thats the mecs system right? maybe pop a cap in its arse and get it going

Definitely fix those capacitors. It's also good to know how to pull the codes when you do your own work.

If you have a check engine light, here's how you can pull the codes.

Or you can buy a code reader like this.

pretty sure its the mecs....02 was still jdm based like the probe critters

I think I’ll look into replacing or repairing the ecm whatever is cheapest; here is a picture of what I got for the connector I should supposedly ground to get codes, looks a little different than the one that you are to jump in the link.

I think some of the people trying to help still haven't realized that this isn't like our Rangers very much at all.
It's a pre-ford Mazda B-Series. Like this:
