Hello first time on this site looking for help bought an 89 ranger when I got it it would run but just die no staling everything would just shut of if I cranked it, it would fire right back up. This would happen at any time, whether on idle or running down the freeway no pattern other than it would happen every time I use it one day it just shut off and never turned back on, tested to see if I had spark and I did not any help would be great.

What engine?

If its a 2.9 it sounds very TFI-ish

No check engine on?

Possibly a failing coil pack
I checked the ohm and it has the right amount of resistance is there another way to check it and it’s only the secondary pack on the left (looking at the engine ) that runs when cracking it right ?

Im not super familiar with the 2.3. Maybe @scotts90ranger can chime in here.

Or one of the mods @snoranger or @85_Ranger4x4 can ship this over to the 4banger forum.

I had a similar issue at one time, turned out the DIS module on the front of the intake manifold needs to be grounded by the 3 bolts that hold it to the intake, actually lead to me rolling the thing...

If I had to throw out random ideas I would say DIS module or there's some corrosion behind it and it isn't getting a good ground to the 3 bolt heads...

it dose have the bolts just super rusty how would I check for good ground I use continuity test but don’t know where to probe

I don't know what size bolts go through to the intake but I would be tempted to take the bolts out and put new ones in, if they're rusty I'm not sure they'll come out nicely though... even one would likely help.

As a note, it uses the intake manifold as a heat sink so don't go taking it off and expecting it to work either, I mounted min to a 1/8" aluminum plate, used heat transfer paste for a computer processor and sandwiched part of it between the upper and lower intake manifold to somewhat simulate the factory setup then added a separate ground wire to the plate since it is isolated with gaskets.
