Currently i carry a snub .38, but now that bears have been spotted literally where we camp/ride i think i wanna get something more.
I haven't much past the first post, but right off the bat this line has me thinking: bear = bigger
In otherwords if you think its big enough, go bigger. 12ga would be a good option. Might I sugest a Serbu Super-Shorty? If semi-suto non shotgun is your thing, maybe something like a 450 Bushmaster AR-pistol.
If I were really thinking handgun that might be somewhat effective against bear I'd be looking at 44 mag or bigger.
For a revolver, maybe .45LC or .454 Casull? Something like the Raging judge could fire both of those as well as .410 shotgun. 500 S&W Magnum? I think the 44 is actualle enough for the smaller bears we have around here, and I'm not likely to be far from a rifle/shotgun anyway when in the woods.
If you decide to go for ammo compatability with your .38, I definitely go for the .357. You can run .38 in it all day, but it doesn't work going the other way. Better to have the option and not need it, and practicing with 38 ammo is going to carry over to the 357.
For pistols, maybe a .50 AE Desert Eagle, they have a .44 options toto if that more your flavor. 10mm of some fashion. I'd like to add a 460 Rowland 1911 to my collection. Those can also fire standard .45 ACP and .45 Super, but I'd be most likely to stick to the 45 ACP and save the Super or Rowland for a MechTech CCU attachment.
Personally If I'm knocking around in the woods, I'm going to have a .44 Mag Taurus Tracker, or .45 ACP 1911 on my hip, though I wouldn't feel underpowered carrying my Canik TP9SFx with it's 20 Round magazine. Then usually on the ATV or in the truck is a Lever action .30-30, or some flavor of AR in .223, 6.8 SPC, or .450 Bushmaster.
We mostly have black bears around here, but I'm more worried about pigs, coyotes, wild dogs, and snakes. Bears here are usually only a problem if you make them a problem. IE: corner them or threaten their young. Otherwise they are curious but tend to shy away from people. The may wonder up and check you out, but generally will hightail it if spooked. All that said, I should admit that I have no first hand experience (and I'm fine with it staying that way), just the accounts of people that have encountered them.
