Truckspotters

There's pictures of newer Ford's doing the same as that Dodge with the camper... frames are just cheaper now and they have stress points... that front tiedown is likely a bar that goes side to side to hold the front down, the tiedowns mostly keep them from sliding around while driving... my camper has spring loaded deals, the front ties into the bed but attached with bracketry to the frame, the rear is just some bolts on the outside of the bumper... Part of the problem with that truck above is that camper is likely around 5000 pounds then they have a motorcycle hanging 4' or so behind the truck's bumper... With truck bed campers the 9-10' range is much nicer on the truck, that there is a 12' (maybe 11' 6", whatever...), the COG might still be near the rear axle but maybe further backward...

I've towed a John Deere 35G mini excavator with my SRW F350, it wasn't much, I think they're only 6k pounds, the Ford 9000 I hauled once was a lot more, and the 18k pound combined load I haul halfway across the state a few times a year is up there too...
Back in the 70s some massive slide ins had a little dolly wheel on the back to help support the rear. Not sure why that went away.

And just hope that it has had a recent set of tires.

I wonder if buying 10 tires at a time qualifies for a bulk discount?

I don’t know. It’s not fun to buy that many tires. Back in ‘97, I had a F350 crew cab dually. And 2 months before quitting my job at Michelin, I ordered a set of 6 BFG tires for that truck with my employee discount. It still cost a bunch of money.

4 Bfgs for my 97 were 1200 bucks

So how did tag axles work? Did the wheels turn like a front axle? Did they just scrub during a turn like a dual axle?

Good question. I was wondering about that

Im guessing they just scrubbed. It doesnt look like theres any room for them to pull up, and im not sure how they could without air. Secondly if you did pick that axle up it seems like the jeep would flop over backwards.

I looked at that webpage abouu them though. The camper portion was roomier tthen i expected

Just there to carry weight and they would scrub on turns. So short though that it probably wouldn't scrub too badly. The tag axle on the Jeep camper had brakes. Jeep recommended the 221 cube V6 and 4.88 gears so you probably weren't going to be going faster than 55 mph anyway.
I thought something like that would be great for the short beds on the Sport Tracs I used to have.
