I'm a recent transplant here in SFL from the blizzards of North Dakota. This is my first experience with a hurricane, so take any of my comments with a bucketload of salt. I live inland, on the Southern edge of Lake Okeechobee, and it looks like the storm will graze us, but it looks like things will get interesting on the West coast by Port Charlotte. We just bought a house a couple of weeks ago and the pile of plywood that I thought was for the windows (per the previous owner's comment) turned out to be just little scraps hidden behind a big piece. So by the grace of God it looks like the worst of the storm will pass to our NW and I'm very thankful for that. Our plan was to take some of the extra money we had from selling our old house and get shutters; didn't think we might need them so soon!

I’m not sure shutters would be enough unless they are some really solidly mounted, heavy duty shutters.

I’m not even sure how well the roll up style like a garage door would work but there must be something to them since buildings in Guam have them.

It seems 3/4” plywood would be the better option but I’ve also never lived in a hurricane area and haven’t seen enough of what is available to say how good they might be and why it seems a lot of people don’t have them. Cost and they are too cheap to buy them?

There are lots of options for wind/debris protection. I think the metal shutters give the best bang for your buck from what I've heard. Plywood is a PITA. It's bulky and cumbersome to install on larger openings so people seem to wait until the last minute because they don't want to do it for nothing. A lot of people have been installing impact rated windows to their corrugated metal shutters are for sale on CL. That was the plan, though after this there may not be as many available.

3/4" or 17/32" plywood is a pain but it may be a lot cheaper than other options.
I did one window at a time on my BRICK house (It's a different frame on vinyl siding houses):
I made a 2"x4" frame that would slide into brick opening.
Then I drilled 4 holes (one hole in each 2x4) thru the 2x4 frame and into the brick.
Then I installed a 3/8" threaded steel anchor in each drilled hole.
Then I cut a piece of plywood to fit the 2x4 frame and used wood screws (screw the plywood to the BACK of the frame so you can install the bolts once you put the storm window in place).
Then I installed a cheap handle on the left and right side midway to make it easy to install and remove the assembled "storm window".
Then I screwed 4 bolts and flat washers to hold the storm window in place.
Then I labeled the storm window (example...Kitchen Window)
Do the above for each window.
It takes about 2 minutes to install a finished plywood storm window.

Mid October and it's spitting snow already. 90% of the trees are still green. Crazy.

I typically don't turn the heat on until Halloween... but it's on today.

It was 73° today. A dry cold front passed through and dropped the dewpoint from 56° to 17° over several hours. The forecasted low is 49°, but that forecast goofed up the low dewpoints, so I think tomorrow morning is likely to be a bit lower than 49°.

It was in the upper 40s, rainy, a little bit of small hail, thunder, lightening, and one small tornado. And since there weren't any trailer parks nearby for the tornado to destroy, it decided to rip the roof off of a barn.

The National Weather Service has confirmed that a tornado touched down Tuesday afternoon near Galt, in Sacramento County.

It will be foggy and frosty the rest of the week with temperatures in the low 30s to the upper 50s.

We got an inch or two of snow yesterday... most of it melted. But it's snowing again now.

I swear I saw on the news that the northern east coast is gonna get hammered with 3 to 4 feet of snow.

Buffalo for sure, the lake effect machine is ready to go.
not much here in Toledo, about 15 miles north of here received 2" a few days ago.
the Gaylord "half way there" snow stick shows 3-4 inches this morning.
