2035

Your telling me... that even with your bum-thumb you havnt been given full jet access yet? You can't be expected to try to properly hold on to a steering wheel... you should be getting rides until your nice and healed.

C'mon guys. This man has made everyone pizzas, can't he get a break?

If you just give it to them they quit trying...

Well, that Kubota remark was way off-base. This is the Ranger Station.

FORD TRACTORS RULE!!!!

@fastpakr If I remember correctly, the image of the bill posted was what it cost to have a battery pack replaced in an EV. I forget the details but that is the cliff notes version.

Understood. I was just hoping for a little more backstory. That price puts you in the ballpark of large Tesla packs from what I've read previously, and a full replacement at that mileage is also unusual.

Knowing nothing about the process battery packs could be rather labor intensive to swap compared to a big battery pack on a pallet.

Labour was only $1,200 on the bill; majority was the battery pack.

But I'll bet you replacing the Coyote in my F-150 with brand new engine at the dealership for MSRP would be pretty penny too.

I would guess around $10k.

A powerstroke is around $20k pulling the cab and everything

I found a bit more context. The invoice is for a 2012 Volt. The battery was discontinued and the dealer found it at a huge markup through a third party. Average battery replacement cost for EV's is closer to $6000, but there are major outliers.
It doesn't help that the Volt wasn't made in very large numbers. Total worldwide production was 150k or so. By comparison, the Mach E sold about 50k last year alone.

I really don't need to?

I'll make it a BET though.. because that's all it is.

Here:

I bet 5,000$ that California in some fashion will start banning the use of gas powered ICE vehicles by 2050.

at the current rate of inflation you just bet the equivalent of a beer in 2050 :icon_thumby:

Regardless of if they start restricting ICE registrations or not.. people not being able to buy NEW ice passenger vehicles after 2035 is going to upset their used car market an incredible amount lol.

I just hope EV conversion kits come down to an affordable price by then. I think it would be kind of fun to convert a few vehicles to electric.

The average battery replacement cost of $6k cited above is for a Prius hybrid which has a small battery pack.

For a point of reference, our dealer cost for a Mach-E battery is right around $25k. That means retail cost for the battery is in the range of $40k. Plus the grand or two to install it. And that also does not include the "mandatory state recycling fee" that will no doubt soon be added to all of these battery packs. So I don't see a lot of people shelling out the cash to replace the battery on these whenever it does happen.

Right now, I can go order the larger extended range Mach-E pack for $23,648. Not the dealer cost, but as a retail customer.

So no, nowhere near 40 thousand dollars.

And the idea that complete battery packs will be replaced as entirely new units is going away. Battery packs can be overhauled - remove the BMS, locate problematic cells, and replace them with working units. The sky is not falling here. Assuming you buy a new Mach E now and your battery pack fails down the road somewhere outside of the warranty period, the likely solution will not be to order a new unit but to either have your own unit overhauled or to order one that has already been through that process.

If you have to replace your F150 engine before 300,000 miles it wasn't maintained. The EV battery is more expensive than an engine and is a consumable, the other shoe will drop when disposal of EV batteries is considered.

Your prices are low but if they're maintained neither will need to be replaced for a long time.

Are building them so that the individual cells can be removed and replaced? That would be huge if they are.
