Adding modern gadgets

Sometimes I wish my ranger had a power window for only the passenger side, so I can roll it up and down from driving position.
We have a dozen or so ‘08 Mack tri-axle dump trucks that only have a passenger side power mirror, the drivers side is manual. The theory is that you can reach the drivers side mirror just as easily as you can reach the switch. Every time we get a new driver, they drop the truck off for us to repair the “broken” drivers side power mirror.

Amazing. In a thread about modern gadgets, we're stuck on mirrors and windows.

Well, I don't know about you. But I like my Ranger because it doesn't have any modern gadgets. Not even electric windows. Owned it 22 years because of it's simplicity and ease of working on. It's a keeper.

This is just on my list of weird things I want to do when I get rich. I want to do a rediculois engine swap (like a 38 liter tank engine), flip the cab and bed around so the truck looks backwards, or take an ancient car and make it Tesla modern.

Electric windows are bad for those of us with dogs. My dog rides in the back seat of my extended cab Fun50 so she won't step on a window button and strangle herself. Not a fun event to handle while you're driving on the interstate.

I wonder if it's possible to switch wires so when you press down the window goes down?

Didn't think of that. I have been wanting to duplicate the child lock feature from 4 door cars on my front door. But haven't given it priority.

Blind spot sensors are the worst thing invented, right next to an enema.

The serve the purpose of letting you know if something is in you blind spot. Awesome. But that doesn't mean that it is SAFE for you to move over in the next lane. Remember back in driving school that you should see both headlights of the vehicle you are moving in front of in the rearview mirror not the side view mirror.

If you move over into the next lane after the sensor goes off, you are cutting off the person you are moving in front of. It's common sense, but alas, that is a lost sensibility in this day and age.

All five of my vehicles have them. I love them. I'd be lost without them. And no, I do not change lanes if I see something in a blind spot mirror. That would be dumb. If I see it in a blind spot mirror, it means they are right next to me. Because I can usually see it in my peripheral vision at the same time. Right next to me. Don't change lanes. Stay where you are.

Like all the other safety feature...
They arent supposed to be the only thing you rely on. They are supposed to be used in addition to the mirrors, turning your head, etc.

Don't forget that peripheral vision. If I can see a vehicle out the corner of my eye and in a blind spot mirror, what need do I have to turn my head? I find them very useful. It's the very first thing I do when I buy a vehicle. Followed in close second by a CAI. ;-)

I've driven several newer cars as rentals and I could do without most of the new BS junk they all seem to come with... if you're not expecting it it just freaks you out... heck the Hyundai Sante Fe I had last week the collision avoidance system kicked in at least twice under normal driving conditions, it made some beeping noises and slammed on the brakes, I was at least 6' from the car that was turning right in front of me in both cases, I was in LA, so I was driving tame compared to the locals... The windows are tiny, couldn't see jack compared to the Ranger or Explorer but I guess that goes with the modern crash safety stuff... The auto stop was anything but predictable on that thing, really annoying, the transmission had like a billion gears and more road noise than my '97 base model Ranger, if you mildly touched the gas pedal it would drop 3 gears in the trans...

I'm with most around here, give me a comfortable seat (not like the '97 Ranger... not comfy... but it's a '94 seat...), power windows locks and mirrors, an AM/FM USB AUX double DIN stereo with bluetooth, some safety stuff (people are dumb anymore, I don't trust anyone...) and call it done, don't need no crash avoidance blind spot sensor junk with seat vibrators and a 3' screen in the center of the dash that everything is ran from with eleventy four buttons on the steering wheel that are randomly placed... sure all that junk is nice but it's not gonna last, I don't live in the rust belt, I want my vehicles to live a long life reliably...
