Anyone else built/updated their computer recently?

Well I pushed out the rebuild as far I could and the CPU died. The new parts will be delivered today so I will be up and running tonight at some point.

New parts:
ASUS TUF Gaming X570 Pro (wi-fi) motherboard
AMD Ryzen 5800X CPU 8 core 16 thread
G.Skill Ripjaws V series (F4-3600C16D-GVKC) 2X8GB dimms =16GB @3600 spd
CoolerMaster AIO cpu cooler

The rest I will be reusing to keep costs down for now plus GPU prices are doubled from what the msrp is so I'm holding off on a new gpu.
I would highly recommend spending a few extra bucks and replace all of your case cooling fans as well, and since the cpu died, replace the power supply. don't even think about reusing the old one, it may have been complicit in its death unless the cpu fan quit and took it out... but even still, psu's are a cheap insurance.

Cpu died from being overclocked so high for so long. Case fans are newer and I keep them clean so they work fine. I keep an eye on my Temps and fans anyways. 6 case fans gets expensive when you have to replace them all. 1 140 front, 1x 140 bottom, 2x 140 side, 1x 80x15mm back side, 1 120 rear. This doesn't include the fans for the radiator, which I have 2 new high static pressure ones on the shelf already for the system.

The only reason I got a new cooler is my currant aio has run now for years with the pump on max speed and I just don't trust it going another 5+ years.

I thought about replacing the psu but it is not in the budget right now. It was a good one and not a cheapo and still under warranty. Got to love the 7+ year warranty the good ones have.

Computers is goes bleep bloop.

As I was tearing down my tower I found the cpu power connectors melted. Well time to go hit bestbuy for an emergency power supply. Was thinking of selling the board but not now. Either psu took a pooper or the motherboard did.

Call me anal & or stubborn but I won't purchase anything but an Intel designed motherboard & processor, especially when I'm overclocking the cpu & the ram.

Agreed. On a side note I got a 30 dollar settlement check for the fx8350 8 core amd chip I bout. They got sued because it was actually a four core they claimed was an 8.

I wish Fry's electronics was still around...oh and Circuit City, Comp USA, and even the Virgin megastores....those were good old days...Tiger Direct and Newegg took over....now its all just Amazon...Or Best Buy if you want it now and dont mind limited overpriced selection.

Well Blackout is up and running. Had to reinstall the OS because programs were not doing what they were supposed to and windows wouldn't validate, it's recommended anyways when you change a motherboard.

SO the final parts list ended up being:
Asus TUF Gaming X570-PRO (wi-fi) - Wi-fi is useless for me as I hard line the desktop but if I choose I can move the tower out and play on the 55" TV and not worry about the internet.
AMD Ryzen 7 5800X
G.Skill Ripjaws V series 3600 mhz ( F4-3600C16D-16GVKC ) single sided 2x8GB =16GB @16-19-19-35 timings
Corsair RM750 Modular PSU
Cooler Master- Master Liquid ML240L RGB V2
Windows 10

About $1100 later

Now I just need to wait till the price of the GPU's comes down to get a new one as my AMD HD7970 is about 9 years old and struggling in newer games. Since BestBuy didn't have anything over a 750W PSU I can't crossfire my 7900 series GPU's anymore but most games don't support it anyways.

I was running a Asus Q551LN laptop was great for the time being. still working just no longer my main computer. I when back to a desktop.

Parts are
Intel i7-4790k
16gb PNY 1600Mhz
10 days ago was running a GTS450. found a GTX960 like wow i can have 40+ fps and the eye candy!
2 Samsung SSD 860 EVO (500gb and 1tb) and HGST HDD 700gb
got to find the boxs for the other parts.

I bit the bullet and figured since I built a whole PC around a 9 year old GPU it was time to update that. I picked up a Gigabyte Radeon RX6700 XT Gaming OC GPU to replace the old HD7970 and R9 280 that I was using. I got a massive FPS boost.

In Shadow Of the Tomb Raider's benchmark test I went from average FPS of 40 to 191 with the same settings. Frames rendered went from 6,336 to 29,709. Yea I'd say it was time, now I get to crank up the eye candy. While I could still play recent games many settings needed to be on medium or lower. I still need to run a few benchmark runs in 3D Mark to compare to my old scores but I am currently stress testing the GPU to ensure that the GPU is good from the factory.

I'll take one of the GPU's and put it in Kids PC with a new PSU to update that PC from a AMD HD 4870, which is more than what she needs, as her system was a hand me down from me to start with. The other GPU I'll sell just to get rid of it though I'm not sure which card I'll install in hers yet. The R9 280 (a rebadged 7950 with boost clocks) runs cooler and quieter but the 7970 has more performance as it is the fully unlocked Tahiti chip. Oh the choices we need to make.

EDIT: Benchmark comparison 3DMark with just the GPU change: https://www.3dmark.com/compare/fs/26208270/fs/26355966 Now there is an upgrade for ya, +300%.

I stuck some new ram in my computer a few months ago... I was getting frame drops in Beam.NG

Lets see what I remember
-i5 4690k @4.1GHz - hyper tx3 cooler
-MSI z97 pc mate
-4x4GB GSkill with a little overclock
-RX480 - forget the make
-256GB 840 evo SSD
-1TB wd blue
-500w evga semi modular
-no name cd drive
-no name SD card reader
-some very cheap cougar case

I have 2x 1080p monitors and most important: mechanical keyboard with cherry browns. Used to play games and use SOLIDWORKS a lot. I don't have much time or interest any more so this computer is overkill for shitposting on the ranger forum and browsing Rock Auto.

I've been happy with my setup. Unfortunately I haven't been able to really play anything done too my really crappy 6mbs internet connection. At&t is supposed to be installing new fiber lines all over my area so we'll see how quickly that goes.

Well first part of it isn't really recent, but back at the beginning of last year I upgraded from my old I7-2600K system to a new I9-9900K system.

  • I9-9900K stock clock w/ cooler master 115i AIO
  • ASUS ROG Strix Z390 board
  • 2x 16gb G.Skill Trident Z DDR4-3200
  • ~1tb Adata M.2 NVME SSD
  • ~500gb Intel M.2 NVME SSD
  • Corsair Obsidian 400D case
  • Corsair RM850x PSU
  • Recycled LG Blueray drive (rarely use it, but won't be without it)
  • Recycled 2x GTX 980it in SLI

Since then (this year IIRC) I added another 2x 16gb of RAM, for 64gb total, mostly because I caught a sale at a price I liked.

Few weeks ago I came up on the Newegg Shuffle (I hate it) for a chance to buy an Asus ROG Strix 3060ti OC and Asus 27" 2K monitor combo. I wanted a 30 series, could swallow the price and had been looking to get a new monitor so that's my latest upgrades.

Computer related, the absolute newest are speakers and chair. While installing the 3060 and new monitor I discovered I was down to mono sound on my speakers (one was dead). So picked up a set of Logitech Z333 2.1 speakers. Never had a sub on my computer before, boy did it make a difference. And I'll be adding a new chair to the mix when it gets delivered this week (tomorrow hopefully).

Also figured out that I had a faulty USB hub that was causing problems, everything is working much happier now that it's gone.
