I was told the purge valve should be located somewhere between power steering reservoir and battery but I'm not seeing one anywhere under the hood. Any other locations it would be?

It's down on the inner fender sorta between the battery and master cylinder. Just a small black gizmo that looks like it has a knob on it.

And that's for this? This is what I was sold at advance auto as a purge valve.

Nope, they sold you the vent solenoid (doesn't even look like the right vent solenoid for a ranger though) not the purge solenoid. The vent solenoid goes on the vapor canister under the bed near the spare tire.

Take it back and try again... gotta love autozone...

It says purge solenoid on the box and website though. I bought it online and went and picked up and they told me it was also called the purge valve and it was under the hood. It wasn't the usual location I go to but the only one that had it in stock apparently.

Here is what I got

The EVAP system has a canister vent valve and a canister purge valve, they do very different things. Vent valve vents air from the fuel tank through the vapor canister, the purge valve cleans the canister by purging fuel vapor out of it and into the engine.

What you're holding is the canister vent valve or vent solenoid not the purge solenoid unless you just bought a generic solenoid not actually made to fit the truck.

This is what the vent valve looks like attached to the canister.

They are both fairly basic on off solenoids though.

It is a carquest brand (not a brand I particularly like buying) but everything on the description says purge valve or purge solenoid. Even the box. And yeah normally I would expect this from auto zone but I got this from advance auto. I've usually got the right parts from them I've even worked there lol I'll have to take it back though

Here's the part from advanced.

Oh okay so its that whole piece then. Yeah I'll be taking what I got back then. I appreciate the help. I thought I was just over looking something driving myself crazy haha

I checked the advanced website, I have no idea what that thing you bought is lol. I mean it may be a purge valve for something but it's definitely not a purge valve for a 1998 ranger. :dunno:

Whether they mislabeled a Vent valve as a Purge valve, or that's from an older system that somehow ended up listed for a 98 I have no clue. I thought maybe it was just a generic universal valve but you're right, it's listed as a vehicle specific part for your truck.

Either way it's definitely the wrong part lol. :icon_rofl:
