TRS 2021 Fall Off-Road Round-Up

Got some time this weekend and installed my Midland mxt115 radio. Ended up putting it on the dash and splicing power from the cb which is mounted to the left of the glovebox.. Get about 4 miles to a handheld FRS radio over farmland and woods. Signal drops off pretty good when going into a river valley. Overall I'm pretty impressed. I might play with a slightly bigger antenna and see if my results improve.View attachment 60435
Got a different antenna and did some further testing. The new antenna is a Rugged Radio Point5 antenna. I ran the same route for testing as before and could barely get 2 miles. Very supprised at how much worse it is considering how it is ~14" tall. I then tested with my tried and true CB and got similar results ~2 miles. Finally I put the stubby antenna that came with the Midland and once again it did ~4 miles. Now I'm more impressed with the stubby midland antenna. Would definitely recommend.

I haven’t found any universal ones yet. I have one for my Baofeng UV-5R made by Rugged Radio. It is very specific to the Baofeng. My TYT 980’s belt clip is too wide for the notch provided.

There is enough material that the slot can be widened and made to work. That might be a direction you want to go. They call it the MT-5R.

I carry my Midland X-Talker portables in these:

Does it come with an ICE cold beer?

Listen to me... I don't even drink.

Thanks for taking this task on Mr. Sno

I don’t drink either, but that didn’t stop me from coming up with the idea.

I love it and I’d be willing to pay for it and/or order extras.
Now we need @JohnnyO to bring a sample from his new brewery

I'll bring a jug of sweet tea.

With the relaxing of the COVID restrictions, the unit has gone back to just one drill. As circumstance would have it, drill is that weekend. I still have a vacation request in for the Friday before and I’m trying to get approval to either make up the drill the following weekend as previously planned or do it early but I can’t get an answer. I need to corner the guy in person and see if I can at least get a yes or no out of him.

Finally got the guy cornered. I got the drill covered on another weekend. That pretty much locks the weekend in as long as nothing else comes up. Still about 3 months of time for politicians to throw a wrench in the works...

Do I need to make reservations for camping? Is there a group camp we are staying in? Just some questions brought up when planning over a fire at Windrock last weekend. If I do please let me know.

We stayed in the "privative" non generator area last year. Well except the glampers. There are no reservation for that area.

I think if there is an idea of who is coming... we can probably hold a few spots for people that are showing up later in the day.

I will be coming with my friend in the Nissan. We have to work half a day and about a 5 hr drive so it will be Friday evening before we get there. So if y'all could hold 2 tent spots that would be awesome.

No generator huh. Guess my little overland tub may come in handy to charge my radio and phones and so forth.
