TRS 2021 Fall Off-Road Round-Up

Dang it. I just realized that these are frs radios. I wanted gmrs. Guess I'll see about a return.

😒

Arent they kinda/sorta the same thing?

GMRS and FRS transceivers are interchangable. Same frequency set. No license needed for FRS. Max of 2 watts on channels 1-7 and 15-22. Max of .5 watt on channels 8-14. GMRS requires a license to transmit due to higher power. Max of 5 watts on channels 1-7, .5 watt on channel 8-14, and max of 50 watts on channels 15-22. No test needed for GMRS licensce (think fishing license). I think it is $75, good for 10 years, and covers you and your immediate family. You also get a sweet callsign. Mine is WRKY567

Why is a license required though?

I have guesses as to why but thats it.

Probably the same reason they make you get one to fish and hunt....That's my best guess. I figured to just get one and not have to worry about anything. Although I've never heard of anyone getting hassled by the FCC by not having a GMRS license.

Here's the million dollar question... are we all getting treated to a gourmet pizza buffet by our next president and resident pizza professional @Uncle Gump ?

Not really a license, more of a tax.

Unlike fishing and hunting most of your money doesn't go to habitat support. It just goes to the govt so they can allow you to use a radio to talk to your buddy so he doesn't hit a tree.

My radios are GMRS. GMRS also has FRS channels, but FRS does not have GMRS channels. As mentioned, GMRS channels transmit at higher watts.

I explained GMRS and how to get a license here:

I haven't ruled it out just yet...

I'm worried my Weber grill doesn't have enough throughput to keep up with demand. I've seen the way people can destroy a pizza... ya'll scare me!

I guess I misunderstood what I had read about the frequencies. I thought gmrs was a licensed subset of frs frequencies but not shared . So I thought they couldn't talk to each other.

I just took the new handheld out and turned on the mounted radio in the Ranger.

AND IT WORKED! YAY!
I was obviously confused.. I'll keep these.

I didn't really want to spend $400 on a pizza oven...

Jim, We need Ford to bring us a Bronco w/ the Sasquatch package to test out.
