I got an 87 ranger with a 2.9, i just finished up my cab swap and now its not running so well. When you start it up it runs like a top, i'll get on the road and it will continue to run....until the hills. Everytime i go up a hill and have to rev it out over the hill in 2nd and 3rd it starts to sputter-put and runs on 4 cylinders. If i put the clutch in and keep it running it smooths out. It does smoke when it sputter puts, so i know i'm getting plenty of fuel. It seems like the fuel is not getting burnt off completly, then when it happens once it only worsens. Anyones help is greatly appretiated, help me figure this out. :dntknw:

All I can think is that you either didn't connect something or there is an impingement somewhere. Sorry I can't be more help. You might also check that all the grounds are properly affixed.

I have no clue what it could be, but here are some thoughts

I'm assuming you used the same computer after the swap as before?

I would think it has something to do with fuel.

I'd maybe try running Seafoam stuff from the parts store through it, help clean the injectors.

Capt Jay, I think you have a typo in your sig. Isn't it supposed to be flame "throwers" not "trowers"?
Sorry bout the offtopic.

check that the fuel pressure regulator has not developed a leak in the diaphram. Might also want to check the ignition timing.

if the vehicle has the vac. advance mounted on the firewall on the passanger side you mite want to make shure it is completely air tight. if that thing isent perfect it will make your motor run VERY oddly but they usually idle just fine with it not hooked up but wont run for a shit other wise. are you 100% shure it only runs on 4 cyl?

Yes i used everything from the truck including the computer and the complete 2.9 wiring harness.

It does have the vacuum advance, i have a vacuum gauge also. The thing is is that it will run like a top, even in wide open throttle. Then the vacuum gauge drops and it sputters out like its loaded up.

Also, i've been trying to figure out the fuel pump relay. The reason why is because when i got the swap done and tried to start it neither fuel pumps would turn on. If i would take the fuel pump relay off and hot wire two of the prongs with the key on the pumps would turn on. So i left it that way because i couldn't figure out why they wouldn't turn on with the relay installed.
Heres what i'm talking about, the red and the orange are connected. What do the yellow wires do? Are they supposed to be hot too? Whats wrong here?

I checked my fuel pressure at the fuel rail. It checked out so i know my fuel pumps are working fine other than the ghetto jumper setup i have at the moment. I changed the plugs, they were really fouled. I put in a good set of NGK plugs. I advanced the timing and it seemed to help alot but it still sputters and loads up a bit. Not as bad as before but now the plugs are starting to foul out again. Should i advance my timing some more? Or back it off some? I have a new set of taylor 8.5mm plug wires on the way from summit. :icon_confused: Help me please

did you switch transmitions?
like, was the donor truck automatic?

mabe the computers are differnt between the 2, i think they are

and ya,the wires cant hurt

Nope, I took an 87 4wd 5 speed with a 2.9 and put an 88 cab on that same chassis swapping in everything from the wiring harness to the pedal assembly. I'm going to clean the plugs tomorrow and adjust the timing a bit and see what happens

my dads red ranger has a 2.9 and we noticed it jumped time one tooth when we put a new water pump on it about 2 years ago. Just saying maybe you have jumped time? It makes for a really crappy running engine i know that lol

Did yours run bad all the time? Mine runs pretty good until it loads up, and now its starting to load up worse because the plugs are fouling out.
