What did you do to your Ranger today? (Part Deux!)

I don’t care where you learned to drive, you cannot drive on ice.

Chains.

I have been known to go up my driveway with my chained tractor holding it back with one brake so I can lightly spin one chained tire and chew up the ice. With good feedlot chains it can clomp its way thru about anything.

It is interesting here, we can get 110*+ in the summer and still get -20* in the winter. I would say our winter "average" high is in the 20's/30's. Just heard the record low for yesterday was -30 something back in the forties. Winters have diffinatly gotten milder even since when I was a kid, in the the last three years I think I have only had a snow worth firing the tractor up for once a year.

Anyway, got my new bed stashed in the barn until it warms up and I get some kind of a grasp on how I want to deal with this project.

You say “cords,” plural. When I was in college I had a block heater, but what other cords, and what are the other cords for?

I have a battery blanket heater, an oil pan heater, and a permanent battery charger cord attached. So I have 3 seperate "cords" sticking out of my grill. My friends powerstroke has the same setup and a trans pan heater so 4 cords. You could also have a block heater to heat the coolant so the cab heat works faster and on a diesel a fuel tank heater to keep the fuel from gelling up. Then you can have front plow control/light cords, and I've seen windshield heaters to keep ice and snow from forming. Lots of reasons for a bunch of cords...

I plug all 3 cords in at night if its gonna be below freezing and have them set on a timer to come on about an hour before I go to work in the morning. Truck starts up quick and no clanking from the oil being molasses. I plan on adding a block heater at some point too but its a pain in the ass to install one on a duratech.

& I bet you’ve never seen someone hang a couple 100w light bulbs from a top band to soften the convertible top before you open it on a cold morning!!!

I've used that trick to keep the fuel filter in my 1982 Toyota Celica from freezing. Put a drop light in the engine bay next to the filter on the firewall, cover the engine bay with a moving blanket, and I'm good to go. Why it would freeze? Got me. I never used cheap gas or at least I didn't think I did. It only happened one time but once was enough. I needed to be able to get to work and made sure it never happened again.

I never heard of a windshield heater. That is a new one on me. I have a block heater, oil pan heater, and a battery blanket on mine. The 2019 would have had a transmission pan heater too but I found out the stinking thing is plastic and the surface isn't smooth. Neither is a great thing to have a heated pad stuck to.

Windshield heaters are pretty nice, I've seen them but they aren't cheap so i never bothered.

I've also seen washer fluid tank heaters, and heated wiper blades lol.

A little follow up. I officially rescind my request for knowledge regarding all this heating stuff. I’ve realized ignorance is bliss once again! Why would anyone want to live where not only do you have to learn this stuff, you have to master it!!! I’ll go back to my ignorant state, a tiny shot of ether in the diesel once or twice a decade, and making sure the 30-sunscreen in the glove box is full with every oil change....

& I had it below the picture “all y’all.” Although I’ve been here 40 years, I’m still not sure I’m supposed to say such things. Y’all know the “War of Northern Agression” is only over in the North...
