Aerostar 4X4

damn...i wasnt keepin up till i seen a link at pirate.

i am in detroit but will be around fri late and sat if you need help still chad.

if dont see me popin off dont be afraid to call bud:headbang: i dont have email so its hard to keep up with threads unless they are fresh.
Do I dare even look on pirate? I got a bug to change trannys one weekend and now i need to get the bugs worked out and fix my steering. RB

well i will let ya know where i will be fri...

RB,

I popped one out of a tranny I have here and it looks like you can cut the flute end off of an 1/8" drillbit and make one by drinding a smooth dome on each end. The one I'm looking at is 1.635" so it's the second longest available--the longest being 1.655".

It would be nice to know what your control pressure is to know if this is even the right thing to be looking at.

I posted the link to here. Someone was asking about making an Aerostar a 4x4 wheeler. Naturally I thought of Rulebreakers build.

Keep it up. If your looking for C5 info look on Dezertrangers. There are alot of guys running the C5 behind 4.0L's. I don't know how different racing applications vs. DDing will affect this trans. But it seems to be the ticket for them.

well call me in the am, forgot i have to get the wife a newer van...

drove one tonight and takin it back in the morn...its decent so if they haggle i will buy it...

but uh....dont think we will be making a wheeler out of this one:D

I finished the steering today and took it for a short spin and the death wobble is gone so tomorrow I'll put a 1.655" drill bit in and see what happens. I might run it into town next week and put a set of gages on it. I'll keep ya posted. RB

The modified drill bit is in with a new stock modulator along with a new vacuum line and it is better but I still don't like the 2-3 shift. I'm looking for a C4 valve body for it to see if I cannot firm up the shifts a bit more. I haven't messed with the adjuster screw on the modulator yet either. I'm guessing clockwise firms them up? RB

Bobbywalter came over tonight :icon_thumby::icon_thumby: and he put a gauge on her. P= 90+ R=90+ N=50 D=55+ 2=90+ 1=90+. When in D if you step on the gas it jumps to 120 fast. He also noticed it doesn't have engine braking when you let off the gas. But the pressure also drops back down in the 50's when you let off. SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO thats all I know. I'm going to recheck both bands again and see if that helps. The longer pin definitely helped but there still is another issue. RB

The numbers I may have quoted are only good for the 10" vacuum pulled on the modulator. The pressure should increase with less vacuum (throttle down) and decrease with more vacuum (foot off). If you did those at idle with the engine vacuum hooked up to the modulator those are probably mostly good numbers. You could see 50 with high vacuum at idle and 150 doing a stall test--brakes on hard and throttle to the mat.

Engine braking not being there suggests low control pressure still. The 2-3 shift being poor, combined with what looks like a low reverse pressure reading makes me think something in the reverse-high clutch is leaking. If it were me I would pop the valve body and give it a careful cleaning and see what I could see. If that didn't fix it I would just take the tranny apart. They are very simple. My 8 year old could do most of it, but I would do the valve body and retorque it. The main guts are about the size of a frozen chicken. You need a pair of retaining ring pliers and a simple home-made tool out of threaded rod and angle to compress a couple things to get retainers out.

I'm just beginning to think it's a bit whipped. A C4 valve body is simpler so that may be a good choice when you put it back together.

I'm going to pull the VB and check it out. I may then put a C4 VB back in. I've actually rebuilt a C4 before but it's been years. RB

Here are the C4 and C5 valve bodies side by side. The C5 is on the right.
My biggest question is how do i get the C4 filter down as low as the C5 one is. The C5 VB is stacked where the filter goes. Also there are two extra holes in the C4 plate. Some of the holes are different sizes. There is an extra spring in the C5.

There are bigger pic's on my webshots page. Last page of the Aeostar album.

bro thats super bad ass nice work hope all goes well

I think you need a C4 pan.

I'll try to find a diagram and see what those holes are for.

i was hoping to be out that way today. i will be going thru detroit in a 10 days or so to see what i can dig up for parts.

see if you can get a 4x4 filter. i been thinking of modding mine with a swivel pickup...its similar, just larger.
