I saw Maria Barteromo(sp?) this morning talking about how dependent were are on China and how this might effect that. Apparently a shipment of medical masks and protective gear was enroute here from China- not a donation, the suppliers were under contract- and the Chinese government ordered the ship to return home because they needed the supplies. US companies had contracts with Chinese medical suppliers and the government stopped them from delivering. Hopefully it will be a wake up call to our businesses- it doesn't matter if China can make something cheaper if they decide to ignore the signed contracts and not deliver as promised. So far, ABC, CBS, NBC, and CNN haven't found this information newsworthy.

Yep, redistributing our manufacturing outside the country or having another country do it was a horrible idea. We should never have let ourselves get into this situation. I hope those profits and bottom lines were worth it.

EDIT: oh, lets not forget the “everybody needs a degree” mentality. Less and less people know how to make and craft things from bare materials as a result. But they’ll have a great degree and massive debt while working to pay it off at Costco.

I know as this worsens I'm finding that my employees are becoming more concerned... not about maintaining their job... but about their and their families safety while coming into direct contact with the general public. I am also concerned about that issue... very much so. I've implemented several safety procedures to help protect my employees and my customers but what is enough to ensure everyone's safety? I don't think there is anything in my power I can do to make this situation completely safe for everyone.
I think this is the general misconception - this thing is highly contagious and we'll all likely get it eventually. The goal is to slow down the initial spike of cases that get bad enough to need hospitalization so they don't happen all at once and overwhelm our completely unprepared hospital system. Once enough of the population has had it, recovered and developed some immunity the spread rate will slow down.

But slowing down that initial spike requires a coordinated approach, not this patchwork thing we're doing. I think our leaders are much more concerned about the economy, and only doing the minimum to maintain appearances so as to preserve their reelection chances and prevent social unrest.

in all this hysteria let's not forget another reason we shifted production to China. The Cold War.
anybody remember back in the 60s when the Chinese population would hold daily drills on how to hate and kill the Imperialists pigs????

then we got the idea that instead of confronting them with a never ending military build up it may be better if we put them to work
building products for us.

of course business' and consumers liked that idea do to the cheaper labor costs.

I remember a guy arguing with my dad back in the late 60s about buying an american plumbing fitting for (guessing price, can't remember exactly)
a dollar when he could instead go to "Bargain City" (a real place then) and get one for 29 cents.

unfortunately the business deal worked out so well for the Chinese that they have tons of our money.
which enables them to build some nasty weapons to point at.......

Hmmm, its getting complicated isn't it?

Please... explain to me how anything I said was a misconception? Is it not my duty to do everything I can within my power to at least attempt to protect my employees and assist in helping this not spread at such a rapid rate?

I never got the swine flu, bird flu, sars, or any other of these random flu mutations that pop up... why exactly am I getting this one?

Sorry, poor word choice on my part, and of course you must do what you can. The point I was trying to make is that these closings are not really to keep everyone from getting it, rather to slow down how fast we get it and protect the hospital system - so those who have more severe cases can get help.

Good luck. You may never know even if you do get the virus.

Just read in the news. Its been a little over a week since Venice has been on quarantine lockdown and the canals have done something no ones ever seen before. The water became clear and dolphins and fish started swimming in them...

It's also reducing air pollution. Maybe Mother Nature's trying to get rid of us. ;)

Ok... thank you for the clarification.

However… I disagree completely with your "point". These measures being taken are most definitely to ensure that not everyone gets it AND to flatten the curve.

Illinois has had 4 deaths in the last three days. Which is 4X the deaths caused by gang violence and drunk drivers combined.

I sincerely hope your practices towards this virus far exceeds your viewpoint.

Im ok with that... i sided with thanos in the avengers movie. :icon_rofl:

The webinar I was scheduled to attend had some technical difficulties... to many people trying to view... so it was sketchy and part way through it crashed. They sent an email requesting a staggered viewing.... to avoid another crash. So I will have to watch it later.

Watching the news... Chicago public schools just closed for an additional three weeks. Seems they're working on some small business relief packages too.

I still say a shelter in place will be ordered before the weekend.

Giving them business to boost their economy is one thing. Giving them the majority our business and not making products here is another. We dropped our pants and all but begged for something to happen.
