Amazon warehouse is awesome


The Firestone debacle was more Ford's fault than Firestone's, and more the customer than Ford.

Ford put C and B rated tires on vehicles that should have had D and E ratings.

But customers complained that the Explorers, which were built on a truck chassis because the customers wanted that, rode like a truck. So Ford said "lower the tire pressure". It went from 35 originally, to 32, eventually down to 25. And then since people don't check their tires regularly anymore they'd get down to 18, overheat on the highway, and blow out. Then people didn't know how to respond, mash the brakes, whip the wheel, and roll it.

Firestone was the only party that really wasn't at fault and got blamed. The customer was most at fault, and they were held blameless.

I agree. Firestone just makes the tires, they don’t choose the vehicle they get put on or what pressure they are inflated to.

It’s because of that whole issue we now have TPMS. All because people were to damn lazy to check their tires from time to time and poor tire selection and pressure recommendations by Ford.
 
Running tire pressure low causes the tire to flex more as it rolls down the road. This causes more heat internal to the structure of the tire, especially at highway speeds. That heat can cause structural failure if the tire.

You are correct but if the tire pressure is within the load limits for the tire, it’s not a problem. Ford was within the limits but didn’t take into account that a customer breaking out a tire gauge from time to time was too time consuming and too much work to bother with.

Because thread drift is not only a natural phenomenon here but a full on work of art! I’ve never seen thread drive like there is here but hey, the company is good and the drift is entertaining as all get out!

I probably go over board. I take the max load rating and tire pressure of a given tire and figure out the pounds supported per psi. Then figure out from there what is needed to support the vehicle and max rated load. I haven’t had a tire fail yet and most times it’s pretty close to what the manufacturer recommends.

It peeves me how manufactures play up the tires like they were so very carefully selected for optimum performance... while I think they are usually just the lowest bidder.

Are they round? Check. Do they have tread? Check. Do they hold air? Check. Will they last long enough to keep us from being sued? Check. Good to go!
 
I somewhat disagree... they want those vehicles to ride and handle good. If they used cheapo cement tires people would take a test drive and say eff that thing! Tires are the simplest way to make a car ride nice. So why build a car just to slap garbage on it that will screw it up?

I heard ford lowered the pressures to get it to pasa rollover tests?

Bottom line is, anytime you take a truck with truck suspension and try to toss it around like a porsche youre gonna have issues.

Isnt it funny how twin I beams had been out for 20 years before the B2 and almost 30 before the explorer and it was never an issue?
 
I remember around 25 years ago the city buses here had a small problem in that they kept falling over on sharp turns. The solution was to fill the floors with concrete to lower the center of gravity...

I wondered that myself when I had to use 4wd to get my F-150 out of a dry grass parking lot right after I got it. The General Ameritrac 550's that were carefully selected for my truck by some beancounter at Ford were gone before winter hit. They looked like four rib implement tires with lines cut in the bars. I doubt the Lariat, King Ranch or FX4's had them...
 
I've never lived in a state (Florida & Arkansas) that has "Inspections". I go the DMV, give them proof of Insurance, Driver's License and registration, and money, they give a me a sticker, and I put it on my tag. You can even get a 3 year tag now. They might check the odometer, if they fell like getting some fresh air and usually use that as an excuse to go outside and get out of the chaos that is the FLORIDA DMV.

I go in there, give them a check, they give me a sticker and I beat it out of there before they get upset over something. Whenever you buy something you never get in and out of there in one trip, they always find something to flip out over.

They don't care about insurance which is fine because my Ranger didn't have it for most of last year.

I've actually been escorted out of DMV like an unruly 22 yo getting kicked out of a nightclub. Called , made an appointment, showed up for my appointment, and was told to "Go stand in line" I lost my shyt, and was told to leave before they called the cops. So I did.
