I have a 01 Ranger Edge with a 4.0 and 5R55E. If possible, I'm looking to replace the 5R55E with a newer late model unit. What models will interchange withe the 01 Edge? I've heard differing variations, 01-03 or 97-07, etc. Looking for some validation assistance. Thanks in advance!

Im a little confused, are you simply looking to replace your trans with a newer 5r55e or replace it with an entirely different model transmission?

theres a screwball crossover point there...first year or half year...or 1.5 year....i just dont recall exactly....

98 up is best.

what happened to yours? do you want select shift orrr???

these are still band/servo....but much better then the a4ld.

but still get bore wear in the case servos a tcc apply and regulator bores in the vb..

generally the vb and servo repair kits keep these things working well...no reason to use a later trans save for odds of finding a lower mile unit.

even if i found a zero mile unit i would pull it apart and upgrade it with the sonnax stuff.

2001-2011 are the same unit. 2002 had a extra sensor that was used for that year. Will still work if your harness doesn’t have the connection for it.

thanks for that....looks like your a builder...do you specialize in these....???

i am needing to work in some custom applications.

Yes I’m a builder, be happy to work with you on some upgrades. Check out my Facebook page “Otto Matics “ for some of the things I do.

The one in her is shot, 200,000 plus miles. To reman, heard new valve body upgrade and all kinds of other nightmare stuff. Just thought it might be better if I could find a late model with less miles and replace it. Thanks!

Brad,

Will I need to change any of wiring harness or will the late model 5R55E be a clean swap out into my 01? Thanks for the assistance! I found and liked your Facebook page. I'm the maintenance chief here for our local fire department. We have a guy in our training division that worked for the Morgantown fire department.

Sorry for the questions Brad! Will I need to have the donor trans programmed? Thanks again!

Steve

ok so i consulted with a local builder here in detroit.

seems theres a quite a bit of range with these...which is good.

the 97 thing is a forward compatibility electronic issue...

unlike the current transmissions these are adaptable via bellhousing and output shafts/tailhousing.

so you can use a 4.0 on a 2.3 via bell-pump swap and go from 4x4 to 2wd with output shaft/tailhousing swap. from 4r55 to 5r55?

need to make a trans that will hold 400ft lb.s i know guys doing it with the w's and it seems starting with one of those and the servo upgrades and shift correction packages along with a 2002 up eec is the way to go.

A stock 5R55 is already rated to 550 ft lbs.

That's the naming convention. First digit is number of gears, the letter denoted front or rear wheel drive. Last two numbers time 10 is torque rating.

i know that.....but that is after torque multiplication.

450 actual ft pounds through them with no electronic torque cutback on shifts seems to contradict the 550 ft lbs....dramatically.... going into higher gears when the input snaps off..or blowing through drums.

the new ones are rated nm...6r80=600 ish.

No programming, here is a picture of the possible sensor locations. Does yours have any like this?

The W/S series uses pretty much the same internals as the A4LD/5R55/44E models minus the removable bell. Case and valve body are all their own design. Stand alone controller will be needed as the electronics won’t play together. A 6R80 transplant would be a better choice in my opinion.
