Okay, so I’m a little embarrassed to ask this, but what does “Custom” mean on a 1992 Ranger badge? I’m familiar with “XLT” and “SLT,” but I recently picked up a ’92 whose badge reads “CUSTOM” underneath the “RANGER” name on the front fenders.

What the heck does this denote?

Thanks. :icon_thumby:

Base model. Mine has rubber floor, vinyl door panels, headliner delete, had a vinyl bench seat.

Interesting. Odd choice for a base model, but it makes sense, since it was a county truck. Oddly, mine has carpet (trashed), a headliner (also trashed), and a split bench cloth seat. :icon_confused:

Yours is a little newer too.

Don't be embarrassed. I've seen early Ford Rangers with 'Explorer' badges before the Explorer actually became a vehicle, and not a trim level.

The Ranger trims have been:

XL
XLS
XLT
Ranger S
Custom
Explorer
High Rider STX
Sport Rider STX
STX
GT
Splash
Sport
Edge
FX4 Off Road
FX4 Off Road Level II
Ranger EV
Tremor
Thunderbolt

2019 will add the Lariat trim.

Fun fact...

"Custom" was first used on F series 67 (IIRC). It was called "custom" because you could basically pick and choose what options you wanted piece by piece instead of a whole package, trucks, being the utilitarian pieces they were back in the day, were usually ordered bare bones, which is why everyone came to associate "custom" as the el cheapo model.

Mine was the exact same. rubber floor, vinyl bench, vinyl door panels, and no headliner. Just the metal roof finished smooth and painted the factory exterior color.

That is interesting. My truck is an XLT sport but I have no idea what the sport package consists of. my truck seems very non sport though. its a 1999 2wd, 3.0 auto trans with no balls lol. Can anyone elaborate on the sport package?

IIRC (and I may not) I believe the Sport package was a flare-side bed, 2wd, and usually came with one of the smaller engine, very rarely if ever did one have a 4.0. I do not believe "sweet ladder rack" was on the list of things available with the Sport package.

Didbt the "splash" turn into the sport after gen 3 was over?

Possible dealer installed option :icon_thumby:

I know with my 73 f250, i have a custom it is the base model, then went sport custom, then ranger / explorer and ranger xlt was the top of the line. customs least in my case were primarily 1 paint color while the rangers and the xlts were two-toned

Ok but my truck is not a flare side. just a regular ranger. I think its called a style-side bed. it is a 4 door ranger but the interior is plain tan clothe. Theres literally nothing "sport" about it other than the word "sport" on the bed lol. That's what I don't get. And no the "sweet ladder rack" is not factory but it is very handy. I've debated so many times about taking it off because the wind noise and looks but I love using it. It's so damn handy lol. So still no word on the "sport" option for my truck?

Well the Mazda Dual Sport package was supposed to be roughly the same thing, and a lot of those were fleet-side beds rather than flare sides. But most of the Ranger Sports I have seen were flare side. Might also be a regional thing with the beds.

In the F-150's of similar year sport was basically bodycolor grille/bumpers and round foglights. I don't think the fogs carried over to the Ranger but I do see you have bodycolor grille and front bumper.
