That is sad. You have no idea how important it is. I have no idea who said it origionally but this quote is absolutely true; "Those that forget history are doomed to repeat it". Trust me, there are some hard lessons we have learned we definately DO NOT want to repeat!

American cemetery in Normandy. From Wikipedia; "The cemetery is located on a cliff overlooking Omaha Beach (one of the landing beaches of the Normandy Invasion) and the English Channel. It covers 70 ha (172 acres), and contains the remains of 9,387 American military dead, most of whom were killed during the invasion of Normandy and ensuing military operations in World War II. Boggin, I Don't do history, but I even know its one of the most important dates in WWII, and in the last 100 years. The day will go down forever in history. Yes, Saving Private Ryan, is probably one of the best reenactments of this day, in any modern movie (and IMO one of Tom Hanks best performances, along with Forest Gump, but thats another war).

Also, by the way, I'm Canadian, and went to Public school, and I was still taught about this. We studied WWII, for about 3 months. Canada was involved, and apparently, I lost 3 Great-great-Uncles in that battle.

Don't say that because we're Canadian, we don't know about D-Day, Say that because he doesn't know about D-day, he is either ignorant towards History, or an Idiot. I'm not big into history, but I can hold my weight when I need to, American or Canadian history.

A lot of Canadians died that day as well as a lot of British, French and a whole boatload of Germans. It was a rough time to be alive and of fighting age. They call them the Greatest Generation for a reason.

i had 3 uncles one in the navy two in the army that were there.
one was with patton on his drive to the battle of the bulge.the last one died last year.
i loved to sit and listen to their stories as a kid.........they are sadly missed.

You know how www.google.com usually has some picture or something that is pertinent to the day if there is something special about it?

Today it has a picture of a theatre stage w/ actors... If you hover your mouse over it you will see it read "Diego Velazquez"...


Now, I think D-DAY is WAY more memorable than some spaniard...

Although my Grandfather was in the south Pacific during WW2, I can totally relate to hearing thier stories while growing up.

I know how to get Boggins interested in D-Day. I've seen my Grandson playing a video game about the assault on Omaha beach. The player had to hit the beach running, avoid getting shot, and take out an enemy machine gun nest. I can't remember the title.

WTF? No mention of the significance of this date on MSNBC, that I saw... Hell, I'm a vet, and didn't even know that it was D-Day. For some reason I thought it was in December - dang-it, I'm gettin' my dates all fouled up.
No excuses here... I went to Catholic schools.

The dday invasion consisted of 5 beaches:

Sword - UK
Juno - Canada
Gold - UK
Omaha - US
Utah - US

The Canadian forces was the ONLY beach assault to achieve their objectives by the end of D-day. They even pushed passed their objectives and were ordered to stop because they ran the risk of being surrounded.
