PlumCrazy's Build

You only have 4.10s? You truck moves those 35s pretty well then.

My 2.9 must be completly shot. I have 5.13s and cant hold 45 mph lol

I like 4.10s because I can buy them for 25 bucks, they are super common, they setup with little effort since they are OEM ratio, and they keep my RPM down on the freeway. My doubler takes care of low range.lol

I would like to go 36 or 37s eventually, so if I have to regear, I might aswell go 5.13 and not worry about having to go lower later.lol

My speedo has been within 3% with the same gear on it through 3 r&p changes.lol

31s w/ 3.27s, 33s w/ 3.73s, and 35s w/ 4.10 all give you the same overall ratio.lol

4.56 would be nice, since I can't quite hold 75mph on a long grade, but such a small gearing change isnt worth the money to me and Im not ready to commit to 5.13s until I have funds to put 37s on and commit to chopping fender out.lol

IMO 5.13 would be a little deep for DD purposes. With 4.56 and 37s I am at 2600rpm at around 70mph. I have to go to fourth for long steep grades but otherwise it's fine. 4.88 I think would be ideal but I think 5.13 would annoy me. Just some good for thought, but if you do regear you want to make it worth it

I wont commit to 5.13 until its street days are over.lol

I only drive it around town and when I need to tow or haul something.

I dd my Civic because tires are too pricy to waste on the Ranger.

I have a buddy that DDs his Ranger with 4.56s on 31s.lol

I DD my current ranger with 4.56's and 31's, It's a 2.3 so it's not so bad. I don't go on the highway that much... 70mph is about the limit before I just start burning fuel above 3k rpm

I ran 35's and 4.56's in my old BII(4.0), and it was just about perfect for a street/trail rig. If not on the street, I would have preferred to have 4.88's if not 5.13's, as 4-low wasn't quite low enough for the slow crawl required at most of Moab.

With 37's, I'd go 5.13, as I don't think I'd want to go over 70 in that rig anyway.. my biggest concern would be stopping with 37's from 70+mph, as that will require A LOT of heat transfer capability.

With my brakes.......stopping 37s would not be an issue.

I wasn't extrapolating that they wouldn't, I was just adding that to the discussion :icon_thumby:

I will probably rock out 4.10s and 35s for a while. But once I get the charger on, I may see if I can squeak by on 36s with 4.10s.

How much air charge psi are you planning on? 5-7 or so?

The 4.0 without the added torque from forced induction will easily shred the gears in the trans..I'm curious how it'll hold up.

It'll be sweet though, that's a given.

I'm running 4.56 on my "31's" (actually 29.8"). It's not bad around town, but like others have said, it tops out around 65 comfortably. I am waiting on the 33" tires. The gears were cheaper than the tires, otherwise I would have done it the other way around. Do you think I will lose gas mileage when I get the 33x12.50's?

Honestly that'll probably be determined more by your driving habits, and less by the changed gear ratio. However...at highway speeds you should be able to achieve a better energy output per volume unit of fuel, as you can keep the rpm's lower for a given speed, burning less fuel per mile.

...better energy output per volume unit of fuel...

AKA MPG
Are you a scientist? Well put.

I thought the same thing. Anything to bring the RPM's down. I've thought about 35s, but I don't think I can fit them with 4" lift and 3" body without trimming. Plus the lower crawl speed might help more than the bigger tires. I don't know, it might all come down to $$.

Yes, I am a scientist..:icon_welder:

Everything always comes down to $$ unfortunately.

Mine is dead on as well. Too bad I dont drive it on the road anymore....
When I bought the truck, it had 33s and 4.56s. I didnt know it had 4.56s lol. The original owner changed the speedo gear to work with that setup. The guy I bought it from didnt know anything about the truck. It was great on the highway with 33s/4.56s. It was my gas sipper at that time lol.
Then I went 36s and 5.13s. Speedo is right back on again lol
