Just Plain Stupied

18 mpg isn't bad at all. Im hoping to get that same kind of mileage after my 302 swap.

Hope to keep hearing better news about your SIL.

It would be more money but nothing that you cant fine tune with a computer.

DG, does all this carb work ever make you want to just sit back with some PB&J and munch?
smack-smack-smack....could you......gulp-smack smack.....talk louder, ads ?

My S.I.L did a little better today...but he's still on lots of antibiotic & pain meds/ MPGs keeps improving with the tinkering/of course it would get 20mpg if'n i kept my foot off the firewall ;missingteeth;

DG did you ever play with the idea of a TBI?
well..what happened was...played with it-broke it......I didn't have the money to get the type of fuel injection that i wanted...so....Holley 600 for $250....

Nope....the Holley doesn't have a lectric connection ....so all I need is an O2 sensor to get the fuel flow correct ;missingteeth;

Makes sense boss, good to hear the SIL is better!

so hows this O2 senses carb thing work?

I think he is setting up an air-fuel meter gauge and tuning the carb off of that.

Far as I know the Holley 600 never had a feed-back version.

Yep....i went old-school because the OEM throttlebody was scavenged...and if i was going the fuel injection route-i wanted multi-port injection-i think?

So "one" of you guys (& you know who you are) advised me to hook up a heated O2 sensor to a needle-type gauge that reads 0 to 1 volt DC....(i liked the purdy sunpro gauge with the diffrent colored lights for $35....but the round $10 gauge on e-bay looks more like the dash gauges that i already installed....

then i warm up the engine......adjust the idle mixture screws to get a .6 to .7 volt reading.....
then i drive the truck around 45mph & re-jet the front bowl to get the gauge reading .6 to .7 volts....
thennnnnn....i drive the truck at 70mph in overdrive just to check the reading

then.....in 10 years....i rebuild the carb-new float-needle & seat $15

actually.....the truck is in the go-rajj waiting for me to take the rightside header off & weld the O2 bung in place.... :icon_bounceblue:

it's called l-o-w - tech ;missingteeth;

I finally got started on the O2 sensor mod........

the downtube has been loosened from the passenger's header ( the big round thing wrapped in white insulation is the starter)....

I also removed the bolts from the swivel joint at the cat and took the exhaust pipe out of the truck....

0032-4.jpg

I drilled a 5/8" hole in the best spot for the steel threaded bung to be welded...

0052-2.jpg

The bung is welded in place.....

0073.jpg

The O2 sensor is screwed in place to make sure the bung threads are not distorted....

I tried to get a pic of the exhaust pipe re-installed....but my cheap-o camera took blurry pics. (I tried again.......upside-down....this time...now that the O2 sensor is installled, I need to re-wrap that downpipe to protect the starter better)

Maybe tomorrow I'll get some wiring done from the sensor up to the dash so I can use a multi-meter to read the sensor.

DG wouldnt you need 2 of them? one on each side?

It isn't as critical on a single-carb or TBI engine since you only have one point to adjust the air fuel ratio. The best you could hope for is an average that is close to stoich.

The only time you need two is if you are trying to adjust each bank independently. Like on those old Jag V-12 engines that have 6 carbs.

I also found the fountain!

yep...that's how i saw it...one carb/one engine/one sensor...left bank oughta be doing same thing as right bank....hence: l-o-w tech (now....i could have boughta $150 Jagawire wideband O2 sensor and a $150 AutoMeter Air/Fuel gauge to make the mod hi-teck ;missingteeth;

Update: ............been kind of "down & out" more than usual since my son-in-law has been to the doctor so much lately...

but....i did manage to buy a couple rolls of lectric wire & connectors for the completion of the O2 mod....guess I will take some measurents under the hood/dash areas & make a harness whilst sitting on the sofa.....cheking out the forums

;missingteeth;

I meant more expensive as in installing a TBI setup, not hooking up an O2 sensor....dont know how we got to that point or conclusion :icon_confused:

Tell me how it works out, I may end up doing the samething.
