A friend of mine has a factory 89 ranger 4cyl.He bought it with no trans we just put in a mod trans. It has no speedometer gear. What color do I need to order from ford? Thanks Keith

Drive gear teeth (the gear on the output shaft) X Axle Ratio X Tire revolutions per mile

Divide that number by 1001

This will be the driven (the one that's REAL easy to change) gear tooth number.

EDIT:

Tire revolutions per mile:

20168 (divided by) "Tire diameter in inches".

This will tell you the number of teeth each gear needs.

Generally the drive gears are 6, 7, and 8 tooth (though 6 are really hard to find apparently). 6 tooth gears are supposedly dark red or purple (conflicting sources), and the 7 tooth gears are an off white, no idea what the 8 tooth gear colors are.

The driven gears range from 16 to about 21, any higher and they don't seem to live very long, they're retrofitted jeep gears. they physically snap in, but the helical pitch is different.

That information cannot be calculated without the tire size.

it also depends on whether its 4x4 or 2wd.

I saw the tech page on the speedometer gears.I just wondered if anyone knew what the factory gear was. And it is a 1989 4x4 5speed truck.

Tire size still matters.

Do the computations and it'll tell what gear you currently need (i.e. the correct one), regardless of what was originally in there.

All sorts of combo's came from the factory. I have 2 t-cases and they have different colored gears in them, and those will yield different colored driven gears depending on tire size (as mentioned) and axle gear ratio. It's next to impossible to guess what came in it from the factory.

I put in a 23 tooth gear when i put the 4.10 rear in my truck. I believe it was tan in color.
