Prius rant

lighting it on fire? im just kidding. it actually is neat to drive. when full electric at a red light, and you take off, it seems like your hovering in neutral. very strange, its hard to break the habit of not trying to restart it when the gas shuts off.

As much as I don't like them, they do seem to scoot along pretty good. It took all my poor old sploder had to take one from a stop light. I did beat him though.

I can't wait to line up with one once I get the 270 HP 2.3T ranger finished (currently in the middle of the swap right now). Nothing like a rusty old POS ranger with as much power as a mustang GT, from a 4-banger no less, lol. I have a feeling I'm going to surprise quite a few people in that thing this summer.

I've noticed Prius drivers and handicapped people are the slow pokes, handicapped Pruis drivers are the worst :icon_rofl: Actually I take that back, people hauling horse trailers are the worst :flipoff:

I would actually say people that love to fly around and cut off people pulling trailers is the worst. When I tow I got the same speed as I do when I am empty (SL +3 MPH), but get passed/cut off 4x as often. Extremely annoying when everyone thinks just because you have a trailer hooked in your truck should somehow now perform like a Ferrari.

Aside from their ugly looks, I can't say that I have ever had a problem with a Prius. All the ones that I have came across are at least doing the speed limit, which is all I ask.

We get a lot of the RX400h's at the Lexus dealership I'm working at atm for routine maintenance. First time I got into one I couldn't tell if the car was running or not. While more complicated to work on, they're very neat to drive. You can barely feel the gas motor start up and it's near instant. Pretty fast for a midsize SUV too.

The cool thing is I can program them with the Lexus computers we have and tailor the ECU programming to the owner's requests. Really neat stuff.

My problem is just with the drivers. I work merchandise pickup, and every day I load up a Prius for some guy wearing 80 dollar jeans with a sweater and a suit jacked telling us how great the Prius is. It's like, what the hell, you think a bunch of hourly workers give a fawk about how advanced your damn car is and how progressive and ahead of the curve you are?

. I see what Chevy has started, and what Dodge has just released being the new wave of the future. They have the engines where at crusing speeds and low power driving conditions, several cylinders (4) shut down and the big Gas Guzzling V8, ends up becoming an economical "V4" (yes I know there is no V4, but this idea acts like it). I see this idea taking over, because as American's, We love our big V8's. I see this being the new wave of the future, imagine this being used in a small 4 cylinder, like a Civic, or a Focus. I see this going much further then a "high voltage" setup.

Cadillac had a system like this in the early 80's. My Uncle had an 81 Caddilac Fleetwood with the "4-6-8" feature. it would run on 4 cylinders on the highway and 6 under moderate load and 8 under heavy. This system was somewhat problematic though. I wonder if Dodge has worked it over to where it is more reliable. We definitely have better technology now to implement it with individual injectors and sophisticated computers.

My problem with prius owners (aside from their general smugness)
is that three times out of five when I am forced to kick my truck out of cruise control
it's some smug jerk in a prius who might as well be wearing a sign saying "look how green I am"

Yes the gas he is saving is balanced by the gas I am forced to waste
accelerating back up to my most efficient speed after slowing to let
him get out of the left goddamn lane where he had no buisness being
in the first place!

My other lesser boggle is how often I see a prius driving in twilight conditions
with their headlights off to save power.

bah this hybrid stuff is nonsense. good fuel mpg's are nothing new. my '79 vw diesel 5spd was built like a tank and got over 40mpg's highway...
with the extra fuel tank in the back it could go over 1000 miles without filling up... i bought for 1500 bucks...
if it wasn't for a cracked block i probably would still have it today....but still drove it close to 200k miles.

point is the technology for fuel efficiency isn't anything new.

and no you don't drop 2000 lbs of gravel in the back of a small car ..for that you need a nice pickup (a ford preferably, lol)..

if you want to be real green get a W123 model mercedes diesel and run it on waste veg oil.

here's good little video

i bet it doesnt take 16 seconds to get to 60 mph either does it

40 mpg is REALLY very good consider u still have enough pickup to merge into traffic and cruise at highway speeds, versus these new cars that move slower then molasses, everyone should start ridin bikes in the summer, would save everyone a whole hell of alot money on gas...

i'd try to ride a bike to work but it's an hour's ride each way. i'd die before i get there.

Good fuel economy doesn't mean clean emissions. My brother has a '68 Bug that gets 40+ mpg, but the exhaust smells the same as our '67 IH pickup with a 304.

true, but diesel has different emissions than gassers, and D fuel now has less sulphur in it than it used to.... as for the bug, my '73 bug would always need to have the carb leaned out before going to test emissions...go figure. i just turned it back up after leaving with a new sticker, lol!
you know what i think .. gas now sucks. you get no power with all the ethanol and mbte and other crap in it.

i'm gonna ride my moped a lot this summer..at 125mpg i don't care about emissions...

I have heard that diesels lost power when they went with low sulfer too (I have heard they stayed the same too???)

Even then diesels produce ALOT more pollutants than a comparable gas engine. Besides last I saw it was $4.15 per gallon compared to $3.45 for 87 octane.

My bro has a stock 1973 Super Beetle 1600 engine in his bug, it really scoots along. I have no doubts it would walk all over my Ranger if we raced... and he gets 4x the milage:bawling:

presonally...i really dont mind puttin out a little bit of emissions if i pass inspection and get 4x miles pre gallon.....but maybe thats just me

I don't either, but it might bother some people. Plus my 260hp 5.4 gasser runs much cleaner than his little 60hp flat four gasser.

Personally my truck is as green as it gets, a nice hunter green...

I don't know. I think we should turn a 4x4 hybrid escape into a rock crawler. LOL
