Prius rant

u may feel 100% safe about talking about driving a hybrid into a water crossing, but if u are then u my friend are the only person on the planet with that line of thought

i would do it.... i may have to bail half way through but it would still be fun as long as i dont have to pay the repair bill :)

I've driven one through a flooded road. (2006 Highlander Hybrid) Water up to grille. Went just like any other vehicle.

Then you do have some definite problems.

BTW: I'll say it again, (maybe it will sink in one of these times) NiMH cells MUST be vented. It is a manufacturing necessity. Each of those cells MUST be able to offgas the hydrogen that is produced in the event of an overcharge or other malfunction. It may not happen often but that safety design component is there in all of them.

so....u drove a stock height hybrid with water up to the grill.....and u consider that a water crossing???

i beleive we were discussing then as trail trucks, in this case lifted, and normally to me water crossings are a bit deeper then grill deep on a stock vehicle, and a flooded road is standing water, not moving water

How about this. I have been here long enough to know that you are biased here. Not surprised. And of course even though I see these things multiple times a day and you likely have never seen one from anywhere other than driving near it, you are the expert. That's fine. I am really not too concerned about whether or not you think I am right or wrong. I can walk ten feet into the shop and answer my own questions. How about this, vented or not, what does it matter as far as the vehicle driving in water? The batteries are stored inside the vehicles cabin and are better protected than the computers in our Rangers and Explorers.

I understand this is a "Ranger" forum but come on. What are you guys, 16 or something? It must be an act because there is no way someone intelligent enough to fix there own car could be so narrow-minded and uninformed about automotive technology.

i wouldnt drive a ranger hybrid through a water crossing, like has already been said, its not the technology we have the problem with, but the majority of those who drive them. the fact is, driving something with a electric motor as a basis is just not sound thinking through water crossing and mud/water enviroments, im sure everyone in ur shop would agree that a hybrid would not make a good vehcile for those conditions, as a rock/trail truck i think its full possible, due to the amount of torque the electric motor is capable of putting out.

if u feel comfortable with it then so be it, it doesnt mean everyone else on here will ignore the common sense that tells them not to drive a hybrid vehicle in a watercrossing/mud.

even though u may be the "expert" on these, like often, many people are not concerned with the views of the experts, and by ur replying everytime a new post is mad u are simply dragging on the pointless babble about it

I agree. We get a lot of people not at all interested in the opinions of knowledgeable "experts." They are also not interested in facts, opinions that differ from what they overhead in a bathroom stall or especially what they are just so damn sure of that they can't be wrong. I'm glad you brought that up. We'll put a flag on these threads warning anyone that wants to use their brains for something besides soaking up beer should look elsewhere.

Sealed means sealed. I would love to have a hybrid drivetrain in my B2. No more fancy clutchwork. Dial-a-torque baby.

Yo,
My dad's little 2001 hyundai accent, 1.5l gets 40MPG, and only cost him $3000. It would take many many years to justify buying a prius over that little car.

Same with my car, i paid $1500 for it 2 years ago. It easily paid for itself in that time for driving to work!!

Chris

Well since I am only an Electronics Engineer and you can walk 10' into your shop you should know what the difference between a "battery" and a "cell" is

So you've been here a long time. That's nice, I've been here for several years, forum, and host changes. Big deal.

If you really do know me so well you would realize that I am not biased nor narrow minded. Your loss son.

That must be the first Toyota site I've seen with "ads by Google", and Amazon peddling on it. ;missingteeth;

A typical hybrid would die a horrible death mudding, just like its gas powered equivelant. Because no part of the vehicle (driveline, frame/unibody, anything) is made for any more intense offroading than a stroll down a tacky dirt road.

The only hybrid that would have a chance off road is something like the Silverado because it isn't based off of a FWD car, but it isn't even a real hybrid. If it was a real hybrid that would be neat though.

The big dumptrucks they use at mines have a big diesel engine charging batteries with an electric motor at each wheel.

Submarines in WWII had diesel engines spinning generators (when surfaced) that charged batteries that powered electric motors, the concept is far from new. Actually some countries are going back to it because they are quieter underwater than nuclear submarines.

and will, what kind of wheeling do u do, probably more trails and rocks with the occasional muddy hole inbetween right, if u had a truck being built to wheel in mud/water, would u have even considered a hybrid system like that in the escape

Yep. Don't have to be here long to learn about some people. Alot of guys here are OK but man, this place sure has alot of people that use opinion as fact. I will leave the thread alone since I am a moderator/tech advisor at another forum and know what a pain it is to deal with the asshats that come up with "instant credentials". Good day folks. Mods, I apologize for making you all read this, I should have known better.

The Bradley fighting vehicle is driven by several electric motors. Those are driven though some pretty harsh environments.

Not only can you get NiMH batteries that are sealed, you can get sealed lead acid batteries. They're made for lighting emergency lights on aircraft. Generally venting hydrogen gas into an aircraft compartment isn't a good idea. Neither is spilling acid onto an airframe.
