Ok, all of you young guys step aside. My dad had a '52 Mercury flat head two-tone coupe. It way, way surpassed the Fords in the looks department. The next mercury he got shouldn't have been the '68 Montego (land yacht) but the '68 Cougar - that would still make some people look twice going down the road. As time went on, the product lines merged but it wasn't always that way.

speaking of planets.....venus is going to be passing in front of the sun today and will be visible here in North Carolina. problem is, it's a little overcast today so i dont know where the sun is, plus i'm inside a building at work. problem # 2 is that i didnt bring my binoculars or my welding helmet, so i cant stare directly at the sun

There are a few 4.0 Mounty's around here. There is one on the street behind my house in fact. Would the 4.0's be AWD as well? I've driven 3 Mounty's but all were 5.0's.

yup my grandma has an 02 Mountaineer with the 4.0 and it's an AWD.

Yes, the Cougar. A neat looking car. Like my old Comet from the mid 60's I bought in the late 70's. A neat looking, lightweight V8 powered street rod!!! Here is a link from a few weeks ago about an old lady who retired her Mercury Comet Caliente after more than 576,000:

Mercury had a great history with some nice cars, but in recent years lost its placed and was squeezed out by both Ford an Lincoln

Fords have gotten nicer to where they were as nice or nicer than some Mercurys. And Lincoln, in my opinion, has come down a little to where they now compete more with Buick and entry level luxury Asian brands than they do Cadillac, BMW, etc..

For Mercury to have survived, Ford should have kept doing what they were doing with the Ford line, Mercury should have raised the bar like Buick has and become entry level luxury, and Lincoln should have raised the bar with rear wheel drive cars to compete with Cadillac BMW, etc.

I can remember my dads burgundy 49 Mercury (w/flat head V8) 2 dr. He said it was always his favorite car and it is probably the reason I liked Mercurys. Yes, they were definitely a better looking car compared to the Fords of the same year.

Your dad had great taste - As did mine. When we got into the '70's the Gruntata split the lines. Sad demise. I would love to buy a new Cougar. How does the song go? "I'm happy about a Mercury, crazy about a Mercury going down the road."
