What is Mercury?

^^^LOL!

Kip, I was curious why you didn't just Wikipedia or Google "Mercury". Remember, we're a forum where speculation and cow manure takes precedence over actual cited sources.

I wanted to know why ford used mercury to make duplicate vehicles, google and wikipedia did little to help me.

In some cases, I feel the Mercury version is better looking. In my opinion, the 98-01 (yes I know they started in 97 - but it still had Explorer headlights) Mountaineer looks WAAAAY better than it's cousin the Explorer. I also think the Mercury Mariner is better looking than the Escape, and that the Mercury Marauder is much better looking than a Crown Vic.

I was personally disappointed to see Mercury go by the wayside.

Mercury goes way back, Im sure they kept it around for this long mostly because of the name. Im sure there are some old timers that would buy a new mercury now, because their parents may have had one back then.

Yeah, I agree. But I'm definitely what I would call an old timer.

:icon_confused: I wonder what the average age is here on TRS? :icon_confused:

Ohh ok. Yeah, pretty much for the base, mid, and luxury models. It's more efficient for them to rebadge vehicles. When you offer Merc or Lincoln people immediately know "fancy". It's easier than custom ordering a vehicle with a million options. Car makers aren't like Wendy's. They make it before you order it ;)

Well, Alan Jackson was crazy about them.

It seems to me that Mercury tended to be a mid-line between Ford and Lincoln. For example, and this may be a purely geographic observation, but I see more Mountaineers with the V-8 than I do Explorers. I have never seen a Sable with a Vulcan engine, nor have I ever seen a 4x4 (as opposed to AWD) Mountaineer. I also have not seen a 4-cyl Mariner. Basically it seems most Mercury vehicles, at least around here, are not equipped with the low-end options that are available on Fords but don't necessarily have the full-blown loaded package.

nor have I ever seen a 4x4 (as opposed to AWD) Mountaineer.

There are a few 4.0 Mounty's around here. There is one on the street behind my house in fact. Would the 4.0's be AWD as well? I've driven 3 Mounty's but all were 5.0's.

What is Mercury?

Mercury is a chemical element with the symbol Hg and atomic number 80. It is also known as quicksilver or hydrargyrum (from "hydr-" water and "argyros" silver). A heavy, silvery d-block element, mercury is the only metal that is liquid at standard conditions for temperature and pressure; the only other element that is liquid under these conditions is bromine, though metals such as caesium, francium, gallium, and rubidium melt just above room temperature. With a freezing point of −38.83 °C and boiling point of 356.73 °C, mercury has one of the narrowest ranges of its liquid state of any metal

AND AS PAUL HARVY HAS MANY TIMES SAID "AND THAT MY FRIENDS IS THE REST OF THE STORY"

Eddie_88 already posted this on Page 1. Haha you're like one of those people who quote comedians over and over because you dont have any of your own material :thefinger:

Haha, I had to mess with you (It's still kinda funny) :D

I see a few 4.0 ones too, I just see many more V-8's. Roughly an inverse to what I see for the split in Explorers.

I see them all the time, what you never saw is a 4-cyl Sable as their only year was 1986!

I did note that my observations may skewed by geography. I have only ever seen, in the flesh, one twin tank Ranger, but there are guys on here that swear they are a dime-a-dozen in their area.

Most of my cars have been Mercurys, starting with a 55 Mercury Montclair 2dr hardtop when I was in high school and ending with a 99 Cougar in my old age.
Mercury models have always been a slight upgrade compared to Ford. Most of the time it was more of a luxury upgrade rather than performance. Mercury did not have an upgraded version of the early Thunderbirds and Ford did not have an version of the 99-02 Cougar, unless you want to include Europe.
