ok i was doing the brakes on my ranger and the driver side front axle shaft had some play in it in and out and a little up and down my question is this normal it has the d28 in it and its a 96 model truck any help would be helpful

Where exactly is the play? The u joint, the bearings, shaft inside spindle?

its the shaft in the spindle you can pull on it and it moves in and out plus it moves up and down the passenger side doesnt have any play at all thats why i was questioning it

They should have a little play inside the spindle. Does passenger side spin freely

i havent tried to spin the passenger is there clips or something that hold the axle in the dif cause when i took the spindle off i just pulled the drivers side out

Sounds like the drivers side might be missing the washers or something on the hub side of things if it will slide in and out of the spindle any significant amount. It should fit snug against the spindle because of the grease seals.

The D-28, D-35 and D-44 TTB axles all have roughly the same setup, the drivers side axle shaft has no clip inside the differential (if it did you'd have a LOT of trouble getting the diff out). The short stub on the passenger side of the diff has a clip.... unless someone does a C-clip eliminator setup.

With the lockout off there is going to be a lot of play in the end. The outer axle shaft is supported on both ends and the outside end is supported by a bearing or bushing inside of the lockout--which you have removed. There is another bearing inside the spindle--the spindle is the thing the rotor and hub assembly ride on.

ok thanks that explains it ive never had one tore down that far and it just seemed odd i appreciate all the help help guys
