When I shut the truck off and open the door. Gas cap seems to be a pretty easy, cheap first guess, but I haven't seen anything from searching to cause this. It's only when there's pressure in the system obviously. My filler neck was alright last time I looked at it when I was bolting my roll bar down (to avoid drilling into it :D ). Could have cracked with the cold lately though. Any common places to check? It's definitely not coming from the bay which is good news for me since I'm used to driving my old RX-7 which was a fire hazard of an engine...

check the fuel filler neck again, make sure it isn't cracked or just hardened and loose fitting at the tank.

other place to check is the charcoal canister under the hood, but it sounds like you have ruled that out.

Ya I have a similar issue. I'm able to fill up on dead e with 20.839 gallons(.039 over max capacity). I pull out gas filler and a burst of fuel shot out towards back of tire from underneath vehicle. I assume filler neck. It didn't leak until then. Fuel filler neck seems fine... Idk. Good luck finding ur issue...

Go through the vapor system it sounds like somthing is open where the vapor line connecte from the fuel tank to the cannister. Maybe you thought you missed the vapor tube from the tank to the fill hole. If the gas cap is good it could be a cracked vent hose when you fill up look to see if it is dripping fuel. The smeel of fuel will drive me mad until I figure it out especially under the hood.

possible crack in the tank? happened on mine.

I'm about to start checking shit with a lighter.

My brothers Explorer had a hole in the 90 degree elbow that goes into the canister. It is mounted on the frame rail right under the battery. I think the battery leaked on it and made it rot out.

When I got the smell on my Ranger it was the filler neck. But it was accompanied with a leak on fill ups.

a leaking injector ..... but that'd be an under the hood smell....

Smelling gas?...dude...colon cleanser should work....lol

Check for any loose fuel line connections all the way up to your engine. Could be a small crack or loose connection that the gas might not drip on the frame or ground since it might evaporate before it does actually drip anywhere. All it takes is a small leak to smell gas.

Check the gas lines for leaks too. I had a pin hole in one of the nylon gas lines. I bought one of the barb kits, installed it and it's been holding for years.

Rusted out steel pickup line/elbow/fitting was causing my leak. I never saw any dripping fuel because of all the mud caked up around the tank soaked it up. On a side note, I took my stock fender flares off expecting to need to touch up a little surface rust. I ended up needing to cutting out like an inch or two of rotten fender off and some serious last resort herculiner-ing
