My credo
Build it, Break it, Re-build it stronger.
Hello! Everyone! Iv mad a few threads on here I did a small build thread for my 1990 2.9 2wd truck, I LOVED HER, but i had to sell her...WHY? to get a four wheel drive ranger! Duh!!! But all that besides the point. This tread is for those people who love there 2.9 V6, not those people who only train of thought is a 5.0 or 4.0 swap. I love my 2.9, Why? Because I can't kill my 2.9. My 2.9 had never let me down, under geared or ticking. Sooo everyone that also loves your 2.9 engines lets here your stories and ideas for your 2.9's.

To start off with a story, I once was wheeling/camping with my 2.9 2wd ranger like...30-40 miles from home, with a buddy. well....his Chevy blazer (1989) 4.3 engine decided it didnt want to run anymore. SO what did a ranger guy like me do? I strapped that chevy to my ass end, with a couple hundred pounds of camping gear (200-300lbs) and drove down long assss back roads till we got back into town. Oh yeah, I forgot to mention... all that was with 3.55 gears sitting on 31 inch mud tires. (Yes my clutch did not like it but I have a very nice clutch in it that handles high temperature very nicely.Luk Gold series clutch kit)

I like my 2.9s. They are good engines, but for as much fun as I've had with them, I am done playing with 2.9s. It's not that I think they are bad engines. It's just that I've been driving them for as long as I've been driving and I'm just ready to play with something new.

I have a 4.0 SOHC lined up for my B2 for when the engine in it dies or I have time/parts for the full swap.

I just put a freshly built 2.9 in my Ranger last spring though, so I have lots of time to think about what its next engine will be.

I plan to put a new 2.9 engine in my 4wd soon (when the gf will let me have time..) i already got a little bigger cam coming that going to give here more bottom end torque. yeah My 2.9 cant go 200 mph.... but I can go 200 yards out and deep in mud!

Forget getting her to give you the time, make her help.

I loved my 2.9 cuz I got 200 bucks out of it... :icon_twisted:

I just went out to the garage and threw a new battery on my 1989 4x4 2.9 ranger and the last time I drove it....it overheated, was cutting off, knocking like crazy, could not go over 2,500k rpm, lost oil pressure, smoking, ect... then she died and had no power to crank....she sat for like...3 or 4 months now...I just went out and cranked her right up with a new battery. Doing the exact thing she was doing before she died and could re-crank because of a dead battery. You cant kill a 2.9... that's reliability you can depend on!

Haha, the IRONY.

I like the 2.9 a lot. Personally its just as sensitive to misuse than any other engine.

I can't complain...i daily drive one with 159k on the clock and it still give me roughly 19 MPG.

Had a 2.9 in my 92. Ran up a mountain in WV one day after quitting my job, I was beatin on it pretty good. Got to the top, she was missin, bangin, clangin, all sorts of cool noises. I limped her another 10 miles home, parked it, and stormed inside and went to sleep. tried to show the wife what happened, fired it up, and she ran smooth as silk. Ragged on it a bit just to be sure, not a problem. Drove all the way to Mi 3 months later with a 600lb bike in the bed, hit a couple holes, and sold it. guy just rolled it two months ago, engine was still running when the EMS got there.......Hope my 4.0 in my 93 is half as tough......

Love my 89 2.9 STX.

I went wheeling with two friends. 2006 Hemi Ram and a 2008 twin turbo diesel F350.

The ram got stuck, The F350 got stuck, but my little 2.9 did not. All with 175k+ on the clock.

Because the only factor in a truck's ability to perform off-road is its engine...

i love 2.9s too, if you get a reliable one, they last forever, my last truck thats still at my moms has 200k+ on its 2.9, smokes a little bit, but runs strong, tobad the a4ld is garbage and wont shift worth a danm.. my mom starts it once a week and its never let us down, he'll shes used it to jump start her escape on a couple of occasions..

i liked my 2.9... it was alright. :icon_confused: to bad the 4.0 is a lot better :yahoo: i love my b2 w/ the 4.0
there was nothing wrong w/ my 2.9... i just got a full explorer for $300...so why not do a 4.0 swap?

and my a4ld has been great. i've never had transmission issues.. from my 2.9 a4ld, my 4.0 a4ld, or the 2wd explorer we have... all have been great. i have a thread on here about "why hate on the a4ld?" b/c i've NEVER had transmission issues from them. mine shifts just fine. my 2.9 one worked fine behind my 4.0 for a few months. i just swapped them out b/c i found out the internals of the 4.0 was slightly different. since i had both, i just used the 4.0 one for the 4.0.

the ram owner used to own a jeep and went wheeling all the time. the F350 owner has owned trucks ever since we got our licences. this is my frist truck, was my first time using 4 wheel drive, and my first time off roading...
