Can I put a thrush glasspack muffler on my 86 ranger? 2.9L V6

Are you looking for opinions? Yes, you CAN put a glasspack on. Youtube glasspacks on V6 rangers, though. Not the best sounding trucks out there. lol

any better suggestions?? I want good sound and pretty loud

If that's all you want: put a Y behind the cat---run dual exhaust out of the Y---get 2 used Harley Davidson mufflers--gut em with the biggest metal-cutting hole saw that you can get inside em--clamp em to the dual exhausts under the bumper (that'd be the rear bumper).....

ENJOY THE 289 cu. in. V-8 sound!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Nice and loud and piss off the wrong guy who might shoot you?? Go ahead. I run a Flowmaster 40 and I love the sound. It is great, and just the right amout of noise that says you have a nice performance muffler and not a crap glasspack muffler. Look into one, Bro. You will be happy with the sound.

I had a Thrush glass pack on my 2.9 for a while. It sounded alright. It wasn't a 5.4L or nothing, but it sounded better than it does now with no muffler. The no muffler is too scratchy. The glass pack mellowed it out a bit. Just be sure to pour a bunch of diesel fuel or heating oil down the glasspack and roll it around to get it all distributed before you put it on.

It "alters" the sound deadening properties of the fiberglass and lets it sound a little better.

I don't know can you? any thing is possible if you have the know how haha. as far as wanting it loud as hell, go for the glasspack. It wont sound great, but it WILL be loud...

If you want it loud make a cut after the down pipe on the manifold and weld on a 16" long cone starting at the factory pipe diameter and exiting with an 8" diameter. If thats not enough, flip the manifolds and run the pipe straight up through the hood.

If you REALLY wanted to know the answer, you would do some research. You'd look into our very own exhaust thread. You'd youtube some ranger exhaust clips.

Yea, I don't see anyone pulling a gun on you for loud exhaust... unless his daughter is in your truck.

A throaty rumble can be a pretty sweet tune that you can play with your right foot, but loud is annoying and obnoxious. There will be people who look at you in their vehicles and laugh. There will be people walking on the side walk squinting their eyes flashing "WTF" in their head. There will be the sophomore in highschool that thinks your loud buzzing raspy fart sound is totally awesome!

Dude, you seriously know of someone getting shot for their exhaust being the wrong sound?

YES. Tru stories coming up: This summer at a mudfest near us, a guy got pissed at another guy in the pits who was revving his engine for over 20 minuets and a family that was also next to the noisy revving idiot kept asking him to stop and the guy just kept revving the motor, threw a beer can at a 3 year old kid and soon...the fight began...and the guy with the pos noisy truck was dead at impact. The guy who killed the other guy was arrested of course but the charges were later dropped.....'Stand Your Ground Law' works for some.
And... this as well. We were at a street rod show up at Orlando this spring and this one guy in a Tuner car kept driving in and out of the blocked off street areas revving his very, very, really, noisy exhaust and this got a lot of people pissed. Remember, I said really noisy exhaust!!!! It realy hurt my ears when he revved that motor!!!! He stopped by a group of people who were admiring all the vintage hot rods and bikes. He backed up to about 7-8 people and revved up his motor and this pissed a bunch of people off. Three guys and a girl in a lifted Dodge Ram blocked the guy from leaving and bashed the Tuner car a few times with ball bats and a crowbar and then bitch slapped the punk driver a few times. Of course when the cops showed up...nobody saw anything...of course. Nobody got arrested. Tuner boy had to get a wrecker pick him up. Somehow after the cops left the Tuner boy's tires were all slashed. Some people can only take so much before crap happens. Some things that are true in life:
You don't spit into the wind, never take a pee hanging upside down naked, and you don't ever rev that noisy exhaust around the wrong people....geeesh!!!!

As far as shooting... Couple people in my neighborhood I wanna. Flooring it down a side street at 11pm will puss people off. It all comes down to, will they grow some balls, or do they alrdy have them and a .45.

I'm pretty sure you wouldn't piss on yourself if you were hanging upside down. just point straight and you'd be fine :thefinger:

Ok, the first guy got shot because he was being an ass.

The second guy got hit car smashed up and himself beaten because he was being an ass hat.

I'm pretty sure the OP isn't going to just sit there and rev his engine until everyone in ear shot wants to kill him. I believe that most people are idiots, but I also believe that most of them aren't THAT dumb.

Gravity takes it's effect in a rather short distance with low velocity items. Unless you are Ron Jeremy type hung, you are gonna splash yourself.

People are people and we love to have a safe place to live, peaceful surroundings and not too much noisy levels to enjoy wherever you go. Every once in awhile some of the cars and bikes and trucks that I hear are way to noisy to enjoy but I see them mostly at the races where they belong. I love seeing a custom hot rod, beautiful bike (vintage or modern). I love going to car and truck and bike shows. Most hot rods have a nice mellow rumble and that is always a pleasure to here with that high lift cam sound. But, some people just got to have that open exhaust way to noisy sound. Keep it to a rumble and more people will enjoy the sound. I always do.

Peace to all!!
