Given your talent for understatement I'm gonna say "minor discrepancy" means half of it's not there and the other half is off by a few inches.

a few inches would mean scrapping the project.

an eigth here and there can cause issues down the road...it gets into what's known as 'cumulative error'.

you measure an assembly off something that's out a bit,then the next assembly off that one,and pretty soon you're wondering why the door won't close.

the problem here was my organic style of chassis design.by adding mechanical components,then building frame around them,then adding more stuff it gets harder to measure as you go.i don't want to have a twist in the frame or anything,so i figure this is the best time to check it out.

so i won't be fabbing the frame jig till tomorrow,but i figured i'd just set up a simple string line to get some quick centreline measurements,see just how bad it will be.

looks pretty good.there's some adjustments to make,but nothing screams out at me at this point.the frame table will just be a carefully assembled rectangle of 2x4 tubing.it will be set up level so i've got good reference points to measure off.

while it's apart i'll be able to give the bottom of the frame some attention,and get started on the welding.it's all got to go back together to set the body,then come apart again to finish everything,but that's just part of the job.

i got the table finished.as you can see,it's a simple enough affair,being just a rectangle(48x144'')with some short legs.

the key to it is that it's as close to perfectly square and level as i can manage under the circumstances.
unlike an actual frame jig,which is intended to build a frame on with all the suspension points and such on it,this is just a measureing jig which gives me some reasonably accurate referance points to check everything from.

with the frame in place it's very easy to verify measurements.it's not too bad overall,the suspension points are pretty accurate and while there is a slight twist on the perimiter frame to fix,i could get away with leaving it if i so desired(i don't so desire)

the worst spot is the front cross member.it's quite a bit out of level,and since this is what the hood hinges and the air dam are attached to it gave the appearance of the car having quite a twist to it when they are in place.it also gave the illusion the engine and strut towers were out of kilter when viewed in relation to it.

it's a fairly easy fix,but without stripping the car and setting the frame on the table it was difficult to tell it was the problem.

the parts are all piled in the next room over....it's about the same size as the one i'm building the car in,but just has the freezer and a couple of motorcycles in it,so i filled it up.


that cr sure sounds tempting.you make sure not to break yourself on it-the hospitals are filled with old guys like us that think we're still 20.

I wish us 3 could get together and ride...Would be awesome.

Sadly I don't have half the talent you do, Gwaii. I've gotta make sure I don't miss any work in order to stay valued as an employee. T shirt, jeans and sneaks are a great way to wind up missing work, if I were to do something stupid, which everybody knows I do quite often.

i missed lots of work to dirt bikes.thankfully,at the time i was working in union metal shops and had my wages covered while off,and they had to take me back when i was healed.


that ain't the case now.

Need to get myself a dirt bike. I wrecked and put my chain in the leg the first time I ever rode one, been wanting one ever since.

Makes sense to me as written, though it does paint a far more painful picture. Sort of reminds me of my uncle steven (not related by blood) he carves decorative "signature logs." when i say carve, i of course mean with a chainsaw.... It kicked back on him one day and went to town on his face, 247 stitches later and he was back at it again carving more logs.
