Sup fellas, well this is about my grandmas 04 Tribute(v6,auto 2wd)

The cars been a bit lazy to take off since a while, alsot the 1st to 2nd shift was a bit rough.
She took it to a shop to get it checked, and they told her that the tranny was starting to slip/fail.

Seems like the module orders the shift, but the tranny won't shift as it used to.

So today she calls me, her car wont move :annoyed:
I went there and started poking around, messed with the shifter for a bit and no go. it just acts like in neutral when u engage a gear.

I made it get in reverse for a while and managed to turn around and drive in reverse to get her out of the street she was stuck in.
Drive will engage for a bit and slightly move, but the engine revs high and the tranny seems to be slipping. No smoke or smells, just a bit of grinding noise.
The Over Drive light blinks on the dashboard tho.

Whats could be wrong?
We need to replace the whole tranny?
I think replacing it will be the best, since auto transmission shops around here suck.

No, no check engine light.

OK, I was wondering if it was the torque converter issue.

There is a valve body issue (bad servo piston) on these causes a rough 1-2 shift. There is also an issue that they have too much pressure and crack or break the forward/coast drum, and then the it won't do much of anything.

Well since the option of rebuilding it is kinda risky, ill start looking out for another transmission.

CD4E's will do that. They blow the one planetary carrier apart. It starts with slipping as the gear cracks and then when it won't move at all after the gear breaks in two.

Yeah, i get it now LOL
if i mess with the shifter it barely engages and i can make it move a bit, but if i rev it it just revs high and stays there, it will move if i just blip the gas for tiny bits.
Is there a reason it would do this? im thinking the oil could mess it, she got the car 2 years ago, and we didnt knew the maintenance record on it, and my uncle never replaced the fluid, until last month.
I know dirty/old oil can ruin them(for what ive red while my brother was looking for a explorer) Shane gaved me a lot of good tips on that one too btw.

RSH, this is a bookmark of mine on removing the trans. Might be some help to you.

Thanks shane. ill save it for future reference, since seems like my cousin and i will be doing this swap

Just remember to get the converter seated fully. It goes down 3 clicks and looks like it is in too far. Then put it up, bolt the bell to the engine, then do the converter nuts.
