So I just traded a 97 honda recon for an 86 Bronco II 5-speed and push button 4x4. truck cranks up as easily as my daily. the guy said he drove it back and forth to work a couple of times a week but last saturday he went to move it and it wouldn't.

It sounds like the transmission is engaged. when you put it in gear you can hear it doin somethin. but no power to the wheels.

took the shifter motor off the trans case and tried to turn the shaft by hand but couldnt get it to click into any other position. it returned to where it was to begin with. only if i push the "low range" button will the motor turn. but the truck still wont move. HELP!

thanks,
Blake.

Auto or man trans? An auto trans with the tcase in neutral will grind a little when you put it in park because the trans is still spinning. Thats one way to check.

When you turned the shaft, did it turn a full 270° or did it feel like it turned against the spring (inside case) on the shaft? If it didnt turn a full 270° then you may have to drop the case and open it up to see whats wrong.

its the 5 speed manual.

and it felt like it was turning against a spring. so looks like I'm going to have to get into the t-case huh?

Yup. Its no big deal, these cases are easy to pull and simple to disassemble. You can have it out, apart, and diagnosed in no time.

That sounds alright. I just want to get it goin so i can drive it.

What are common things to check with these transfer cases and push button 4x4 systems?

also, a bit off subject but are ranger doors the same as b2's?
I want half doors and need to know if any other doors fit. just to keep my options open when junk yardin.

nevermind. about the doors. i just used the good ol' search function.

but still if anyone can give me a list of common problems with these transfer cases that would be great.

thanks

in short '83 to '88 ranger doors.
and B2 doors of course.

the whole story...

Other than the differences between the Gen1 (1983-88) and Gen2 (1989-92) doors
they are the same.

the Gen2's use an armrest that's integral with the door panel and have
provisions for a door mounted speaker.

Avoid the vent window doors, people think the vent windows are an
improvement, but they aren't the vent windows on a ranger are next
to useless, they leak, they make wind noise and they rust.

Not to mention they block visibility

And you'd THINK that the front edge frame would keep the window in it's track...

you'd be wrong

rolling the windows up on vent window doors at highway speed can let the top
of the window windup outside of the track and if you don't see that it has done so
can cause the widow to break if you keep pressure on the crank...

Lastly specifically avoid the 1992 Ranger doors.

1992 only the gen2 rangers used a cable for the latch release
1989-91 use a pushrod.

the pushrod door handles are a lot more reliable...

though you might want to consider replacing the roll pin that the handle
itself pivots on with a long 10-32 machine screw.

Check for suck. If any suck is found in your push-button 4x4 replace it with a manual t-case.

BTW, they all suck.

Your gonna find a lot of it.

yeah i'd much rather have a shifter in the floor. makes me feel like I'm actually doing something. lol same for the hubs.

what can i expect to pay for a manual t-case? If its too much i'm gonna have to just fix what i got.
