I need help to know how I change a slave cylinder on my 1998 Ford Ranger 4x4 3.0 v6. Somebody told me I needed to drop my entire transmission to replace it and somebody else told me no I didn't.

Could anybody be of some help so I can easily understand how to change the slave cylinder on my truck.

Thanks in advance.

your truck has whats called and internal slave cylinder (mounts inside the bellhousing and acts directly on the pressure plate)

therefore you do need to remove the transmission to access the slave cylinder. i recommend buying a haynes or chiltons repair manual, they are usually about $20 and have the information you need to get the job done.

Im changing the clutch and slave cylinder out on my friends 86 Ranger right now. You have to drop the tranny to get the slave.

while you're in there, you might as well change the clutch and have the flywheel resurfaced.

And that person doesn't know what they are talking about.
I think some (or all) of the diesels had external slaves, being the only exception to the rule.

Yep, you are going to need to drop the tranny. Since you will be dropping the tranny, now would be a good time to replace the clutch, resurface the flywheel, replace seals, and the slave clutch. If you don't want to do it yourself, Ford's quote is like 4.2hrs for $400 in labor (no parts).

I think some (or all) of the diesels had external slaves, being the only exception to the rule.

The TK's had external slaves, but those were completely phased out over 10 years before the OP's truck was built.

Jeep still uses them, but they are the only company that I know of to do so.

Well my truck already has a brand new Clutch kit/flywheel all of the good stuff from 2 weeks ago. Just need a slave cylinder put in now. Thanks for the help, me and my uncle will be working on it this weekend.
