the radius arm bushing on my 91 ranger is loose. The shop told me the rubber bushings need to be replaced, but it looks like I can just tighten the nut. The bushings look good, not cracks or anything. Does anybody have any experience with this problem?

I've replaced my bushings with used from a parts truck I had. IIRC going from the front of the truck you should have;

worktruck502-1.jpg

From left to right;
A big convex curved washer
A rubber 'donut'
frame mount - not in picture
A hard plastic donut
A black plastic ring - not in picture
A rubber donut
A big round flat washer
passenger side only heat shield
The nut that holds it all together.
The nut is torqued to 175 ft/lbs [?]. I don't see the nut backing off. I was doing a lift, I found the plastic pieces broken on mine so I changed them. Now that I've looked at the only pic that I could find I'm not so sure about the two plastic pieces...or the order the stuff is in, my memory may be playing tricks on me:shok:. Hopefully someone confirms my memory so I don't have to commit myself to the old folks home:shok: In my defense, I did this over 9 months ago and I had both trucks apart and pieces all over before I decided to take a pic. There was some discrepancy in pieces from the '87 to the '91, both Rangers
Good luck,

Richard

A "loose" rad arm bushing is one that is spent. I've pulled out a few sets of these bushings and they all showed severe wear damage which is what casues their "looseness".

Someone else may go into more detail for you, but all I will say is replace both driver and passenger side bushings.

is it a big job changing them out? Shop wants to charge me 200+ for the fix.

It's a pretty easy DIY. Use the search button, I've seen a few threads. If search doesn't work for you add another post and I'll try to help.

It may just be loose...

But it sounds more likely that the rubber is just worn out.

I would remove the nut and take a closer look at the bushing.

Replacing them is easy, and there are two ways to do it. My way, and the stupid way.
