Looking at getting an ATV for putting around at the camp, and maybe a trail or two.
Would like to get a 350-400 so I can put a rear seat on it for the wife.

I would like to avoid dragging a trailer around if at all possible. Plus that would cut into my ATV budget by at least $500. Not to mention the yearly inspection, registration, maintenance, etc.

Looking at something in the 96-2002 range, 350-400cc, 4x4.
Not super fussy on brand, just looking to find one that's been looked after well.

Question is, who's carrying one in the back of their Ranger, and does anyone know of any specific models in around what I'm looking for that will NOT fit?
I'm thinking more of the width, rather than the length.

Driving with the tailgate down and the back wheels on it doesn't bother me...It'll be tied down well with ratchet straps.

I dunno, maybe none of them will fit...let me know.

Thanks in advance!!

I know as far as sport quads, any fit. I regularly haul a raptor 660 around with the gate closed when I go out while pulling a trailer with another quad. I would assume any would fit but some of the bigger 4x4's would require you to leave the gate down. Cant really say for 4x4's tho

most to all 4 wheel drives will NOT fit in a ranger unless you drive over the fenderwells and make sure the front bumper/guard doesent touch or is close to the back window

Any should fit, its just a matter of whether it fits between or over the wheel humps. An atv by definition(in most states) must be less that 50" wide and I know a ranger bed is at least that(I think theyre 54" or something?)

Just googles a few, they're around 46" wide.

Polaris Scrambler 4x4 fits, but you have to drive over the wheelwells.

Your gonna have to drive over the wheel wells with any 4x4, but any of them will fit with the tailgate down. Best thing to do is find one you like that you wanna buy, talk to guy into letting you load it up for fitment, and see what you think. Otherwise go to the atv dealership and tell them to load up the largest one they have. See if it fits unload it and say adios.

i seen a guy in highshool haul 2 quads in a 1998? ranger. he put one on the back wheels and pushed against the cab and then he pulled the other in right behind it, of course he had to leave the tailgate down but they fit and he hauled them a few times that way

As long as there is nothing to punch out your back glass I dont see why you couldnt haul them.

Well my step father-in-law has loaded up a fairly large Yamaha in the bed of our S-10 several times. That bed is basically the same size as the Ranger's short bed.

Just let this answer your question

you can make some min-ramps to go just inside your wheelwells out of some 2x4's. make them kinda follow the shape of the inner fender. that way you can drive over the fenders without the edge of the atv rim scraping/denting the inner fender.

i could fit a stock honda 300ex in the back of a 98 ranger stepside.... barely. you can fit dang near any atv in a regular ranger bed.

Awesome folks....thanks a ton for the info!!!!

If everything goes well I'll be picking up the bike in the next couple days. It's a couple hours drive away and I have a buddy 15 minutes from there that knows the Yamaha quads really good and he's checking it out for me tomorrow morning.
Yamaha Grizzly 600 4x4. woot! 1-up seat, big winch (swaps front and rear), good rubber, new starter, new fairing.. sorry..excited... :p

I have a nice tilt trailer that I can borrow to go get it, then gear something up to stop the front wheels before anything hits the cab or glass, and so on, if needed.

Thanks again for all the help/info/pics!!!!!

Our 2000ish Suzuki King Quad fits perfect in the Ranger.

Old, pic I had....the foreman wedged itself between the wheel wells until I got through them on stock tires, going to 26" XTR's makes it go over the wheel wells. The only 4wd I could get the tailgate shut with is the dual solid axle early 90's Honda 350, and we had to let the air outta the back tires.

watch the yamahas front bumper i dont like to load our grizzley because of the front bumper touches the glass once and a while, but it will fit just sayin be careful
