Anyone have any experience with audio systems in a boat. We have an early 80s 19ft glastron. My dad did the audio way back so it has a basic kenwood tape deck a pair of sony 6x9s and some cheap bookshelf type speakers. I was thinking newer cd receiver and 4 6x9s maybe an amp. Any suggestions?

If you get an actual marine stereo your gunna pay big. Just get one for a car and get the front cover from West Marine ect. Then just use 6x9's with a poly-speaker not paper and use heat shrink and corrosion block on your connections. I did it that way in my jet-boat and its been going strong for 6+ years running bad ass Alaska rivers and in the salt. :icon_thumby:

This question got brought up the other day at the audio store and the guy suggested the same as lima bean. He was saying I could spend big money on "marine" speakers or just spend 1/2 as much on nice poly car audio that last about as long as marine. O ya you will prob. want to get a deck that has a aux input for a mp3 player. cause everybody has to play boats and hoes when coming back into docks.

they make water proof cases that will protect the HU. and x2 on some middle of the road poly coned speakers. depending on were the speakers are. you can get the cheep glad wear containers and silicone them to the back to stop water from getting back there. and use the lids as covers to stop sun damage on the rubber as it sitting out side. and just take them off when your gonna use them. amping will be another story. do you have zinc's on your boat. and youll have to make a switch (depending) to have a acc on line so its not on all the time. but it can rock out....

I dont think it'll need an amp, Im not looking for some super system, just one for some tunes while rafting of cruising (although it may be hard to hear over the roar of the small block v8:icon_hornsup:)

speakers should be pretty much out of the sun and im not really concerned with them getting wet but i dont want them to get damaged in they get splashed a bit

this is very similar to our boat except a few years older

the front speakers go under the sx-190 emblem where that lighter? is on either side. The other 2 will be in the back but still under the side.

What do you mean by zincs?

from the boats looks you have zinc's. if you know it or not... they kinda look like big lead weights attached to the outboard under the water line. they are a sacrificial anodes. when you have electrical/seawater combo you get electrolysis, which will corrode soft metals. like props, shafts, ect ect. so you use zinc cause it cheepish and really low on the Galvanic Scale. so it will corrode faster and save important stuff. as your adding more neg charges to the "ground" of the boat it will cause them to corrode faster to make sure you have good ones.

but all your parts look good

Well the boats used in strictly fresh water but it might still have them.

Would any of these be better?

Is there any advantage to using all the same brand or does mix matching not matter? And does 22wrms vs. 18wrms make a noticeable difference? thanks

i would either go with some coaxials and independent tweeters, or some 2-ways (3-ways if you must, but 4-ways just getting excessive), or some components.

out of all of that, it seems that you'd get the best sound/price combo at 2-way speakers, priced somehwere between $50-100

a 75-150 dollar deck is all you really need. go towards the lower end if you won't have a sub, external amps, mp3 player/ipod hookup, etc.

also, check for your products on other sites, they can be much cheaper.

The speakers I posted seemed to be the best ones (review wise) for the least money. I didnt even really pay attention to how many drivers they had.

I just use crutchfield for my research. Basically I know nothing they sell is gonna be crap so its like a filter for my searching, doesnt necessarily mean Im gonna buy it from them.

Are all headunits/ cd players anti-skip? I assumed that was just a given nowadays but my dad wanted me to check. Id be pretty silly if they weren't.

mix and matching wont matter. you just want your RMS to match. 22-18 matter? only to your top end. it will preform better in the higher vol. but not really worth anything more then $20 +/-

they are all anti-skip to a certain extent.... then again, if you get one that can play your ipod/mp3 player, as long as that is a flash based memory instead of a disc based it can never skip. even most of the disc based mp3 players very rarely skip.

crutchfield sells some crap, but you haven't posted anything that i would classify as crap... go with your gut i would say, all above posted are approximately equivalent, give or take in a few categories...
