well i searched a few older threads and found some ideas but still having a this problem with my 86 bii. Yesterday on my way to work my truck stalled out twice, since my gas gauge is broken and i went 4x4ing the other day i assumed i burned more gas than planned and put a gallon in it from my little spare gas tank. got to work fine, started after work just fine and halfway home died in the middle of the busiest intersection, after a big scene and being pushed by a state trooper, i checked to hear my fuel pumps and heard nothing, checked the inertia switch its was good, checked the relays, got out test light, power is at the fuel pump relay. so i checked it at the FPIS and got nothing, checked power to the high pressure pump and nothing. if i got power coming outta my relay where does that wire go next? cause that's were i am thinking my problem is, cause power is lost before the inertia switch.
:icon_confused:
Well to get home from the parking lot i ran a speaker wire from a fuse in my fuse box out the door and to the + on my high pressure pump, it got me home and into the garage this morning but i don't wanna keep running it like that, and i don't here my in tank pump like that, don't wanna risk burning up the high pressure pump. i ran a jumper wire to the inertia switch and heard the high pressure running, but not the low in tank, but it was loud outside and could have missed it, i checked pressure on the rail and there was a lot of pressure, could feel fuel pumping through the lines, tried to start it and it wouldn't fire, the high pressure pump was running for sure, but by a jumper wire to the FPIS. could my in tank pump be bad and cause the power loss to both pumps? any thoughts thanks for the help.

yes great story.

what is exactly meant by "a Lot of pressure" at the fuel manifold??
did you have a gauge on it??

seem to me that you have a wire problem of some kind ...seem that you just routed power direct to the pump. so it could be a bad wire/connection or a bad relay.

change out the relay, if you can jump the relay and the pumps work, it's the relay, i had the same problem on my 88 ranger, it would cut out and then start back, then it just cut out and nothing, turned out the relay was going out when it was getting hot.

Both pumps are wired together, you might not hear one because of the other, and of the low pressure was bad, the high pressure one would not work, just make noise, it can't pull fuel, just push it, that is why there is the low pressure one.

Check the ground wire by the battery. There is a connector there with one spade terminal inside. Mine was completely corroded to nothing. This is the ground for the EEC relay....with no ground applied to EEC....no juice to the FP's. I completly removed the connector and just spliced the wires and wrapped it with a couple of layers of black electrical tape to keep it somewhat protected. I know black elect. tape isn't the best way to keep out the elements. Im prolly going to change it out with some Scotch 70......

Shrink-wrap!

We use shrink-wrap in our water wells 700 feet under water! It'll keep everything tight under a hood.

I well pump wireing yo generally use the hot-melt glue fiilled heat shrink tubing.

That stuff is good to 1200 feet or so.

I used it years ago on some marine cables for "shallow water" applications
(remember the AVERAGE depth of the ocean is >10,000 feet)

my '89 was doing something very similar to this except my FP relay would come on then you could hear it freak out on and off then back on, It never shut off when turning the key on to prime. Tonight I pulled apart most of the harness under the hood, cleaned grounds, checked connections and now it is working properly but still runs like crap. To answer your first question the power goes from the FP relay to the Inertia Switch then from there to the pumps.
