My friend bought two rangers to build into 1. He got them both for 50.00. One is a 4x4 85 and the other is an 88 ext 2 wheel drive. The 4x4 has a motor that has issues so we took the motor out of the 88 and swapped it into the 4x4. I was not at his house when he took the motors out. When I went over there a few nights ago he was drilling out and tapping the exhaust manifold holes. They looked hammered and had heli coils in some of the holes. They broke the exhaust manifold in half taking the motor out of the truck as well. I am now going to take the 88 and put my motor and trans into it. I dont want to break bolts off doing the swap. What do you use to remove the bolts? Do I soak them all for a week or so before I remove them? Do I use heat?

TIA

If the manifold has not been off for some time....Soaking & heat , maybe your best approach....don't be surprised if they do break anyway. Some suggest giving the bolt head a good smack with a hammer, Like driving a nail....to give the bolt a shock to help loosen the threads.

When I swapped an 88 engine into my 86, I did not remove the exhaust manifolds and would not have even considered trying to remove them. That always turns into a nightmare on an old engine. It is hard enough removing the Y pipe from the manifolds, but much less of a nightmare. In fact I now recall disconnecting the catalytic converter from the Y pipe and pulling the engines with the Y pipe still attached to the engines and then removing the Y pipes after the engines were out. Then laying the Y pipe in the engine bay before dropping the good engine back in.

Just replaced all my bolts on my 2.9. Napa had them.
