Hey guys, I finally got around to finishing my 4.0 build up and placing it into the ol'92. Background info:

new: all bearings - timing chain - gaskets - all seals - lifters - filters - thermastat - plugs - push rods (5.5" custom) - rings - cam 410

cleaned: injectors - heads P&P - block (A OK) - intakes & exhuast - reseated old valves new seals - pistons. (you guys know the drill)....

After firing up this motor she purred like a top. however, runs rich.

Problem - still breaking in the motor, and I notice the rich gas smell and she is expelling loads of unburnt fuel (fuel mileage is uhhhgly) had Angie following me and I accelerated going up a hill and she had no prob seeing black exhuast from my pipe. (stock exhuast no heads or special tunes)

My thinking - checked. vacuum lines (seem ok) o2 sensor (seems ok) from doing reading timing should be comp controlled however, i am a bit confused about 10degrees btdc, for when i built her up i went tdc all the way. if anyone may be able to explain this a bit more i would be thankful. It almost seems like the motor is running a bit out of time if this is possible with the computer managing the system. (yes i double checked firing order)

anyone have this prob before? and is it a chip or some fine tweaking that needs to be done now?

thanks

do you have any cel?

OK after figuring out CEL = check engine light.....

yes, it comes on however, it will sit and idle forever with out it coming on. just when the motor gets running (after about 5 minutes in drive) the light comes on. hope that helps.

thanks

Can you read off the codes for us?

I wish I had a reader or a way to get codes. sorry no I can't list anything. This kinda was my next step, taking the truck into a place to get them to fine tune it. I was hoping someone in here has had this same thing happen to them and they had a general idea of what direction to look into.

thanks

thought i would share these couple pics, i was teased about painting the block white during the summer when i mentioned painting it.

how come this site won't let me insert the little thumbs anymore?

Hey guys, I will build a reader to get the codes (hopefully tommorow). Angie has been doing a bit more research into this prob. I am leaning to replacing the o2 sensor and getting the cat checked out. for these 2 things together are sounding more and more like the troubles. today we went for a long drive to give the motor a break in and here is what we observed.

1. $80. worth of fuel = 80 liters or 17.6 gallons
drove 326 kms = 203 miles or 11.5 miles per gal

2. rpm of the engine averaged about 2000 - 2200 @ average speed of 115 km/h or roughly 72 miles per hour ( i feel strongly that this rpm is way too fast for the engine in normal cruising). any thoughts?

3. power was there however, a bit slugish - acceleration was good when placed foot into it.

will update with codes

thanks for the help and the link to the code above :)

The rpm sounds right. Mine sits at 2200 at 100 kph . Its a auto.

The kilometers are low. Mine with close to 290,000 on the engine gets about 400k on the tank, it was doing 500k all summer now its dropping again. With lots of in city on that.

In 91 I had a fresh off the lot extended cab 4.0l and that truck never went above 1600rpm and i drove it (my constant speed of 120Kmh) highway. the motor i rebuilt was from this same truck (400K kms), and placed it into the 92 body. with your truck is it a stock engine or you running a 410 camshaft? Neither of these 2 trucks are 4X4s

thanks

What gearing is in the rear end?

What gearing is in the rear end?

hi, no idea on gears, highway gears i am betting. for this white 92 ran ok up till i parked it for a couple weeks and swapped the 2 motors. I didn't notice anything different from driving the 91 then the 92, basicaly the same truck. The 92 drove on the highway (old motor) average 120 kmh @ same 1500-1600 rpm when working.
